The teaching methods are in the same category. All three factors contribute to an impossible teaching situation in a classroom. How on earth do you manage a class of illiterate and innumerate students?
Get politics and social engineering out of schools and bring in real education- not progressive fanatical ideology.
Should go back to the teaching methods of the 1920s. Solitary teachers managed huge classes and nearly all emerged with basic arithmetic, writing, reading skills and attendance and behaviour habits. Even from the "native" schools. Students were failed to their level so the teacher had one class instead of several merged. Slow students were not overwhelmed and discouraged. Of course also had the strap... Sue Bradford is responsible for much modern behavious and crime. The teacher had clear syllabus and textbooks; now history alone as specified will need full time consideration to fathom. All side tracking maori twaddle needs to be discarded. Any pupils subject to total immersion should have their remedial work paid for from maori Treaty fund allocations. On looking back many of my teachers were of modest ability but coped under the then system. One was outstanding. She practised the methods of my father's day. Often in public libraries I note little girls in particualr taking out a mountain of childrens books. It is absurd that at school they will be coralled with others who seem to have never read or been read anything. And with limited spoken English.
I do not believe in the strap any more than I believe in cannibalism or kicking dogs. However I do support the basics of reading writing and arithmetic. I think spelling and grammar are basic too - something not always seen in the work of teachers. Why not be literate?
RESPECT has become an alien concept for many kids. It is an essential element in my view in the human development process. We could learn a lot from observing sparrows. Kids, when they are actually at school are being taught what to think, not how to think. Maybe that capability has been largely lost in our 'enlightened' pc era.
When my daughter started primary school at 5 she could read, print and do simple arithmetic because I taught her at home. I was a solo dad since she was 15 months old and I had a part time job but still made the effort to give her a good start in life. The standard of parenting in todays lower social economic class is totally pathetic, the taxpayer has to provide meals and even shoes for many kids at school. Their parents should be ashamed but are usually too stoned to really care. Kiwialan.
