Alwyn Poole: Erica Stanford has the greatest opportunity for Education in Living memory.

Let me be 100% clear. To appoint David Seymour or Brooke van Velden to a role as important as the Minister of Education, in the current context, would be a disaster. Neither or them have the knowledge or charismatic ability to lead the sector through change that needs to have our parenting and schooling leading the world in six years.

Seymour was an architect of the Charter schools model and – while good things were done through the expertise of Karen Poole, Nick Hyde and Raewyn Tipene – it was so poorly implemented that only 11 schools got going and were easy targets for Labour and the unions when they regained power.

Be in no doubt … out education system is in crisis and this is a sweep the table and start again moment. I would much rather Seymour has the symbolism of Deputy PM than the actual effect of Minister of Education.

I spoke to Michael Laws on this today [2 November 2023].

Alwyn Poole, a well-known figure in the New Zealand education system, he founded and was the head of Mt Hobson Middle School in Auckland for 18 years. This article was published HERE

None of these people are capable of rooting out the career Marxists in the MoE.

It will need someone "as cunning as a fox who's just been appointed Professor of Cunning at Oxford University"

Good luck.

Let's be honest.
Whoever gets the poison chalice and has to go into battle with the legions of woke Lefty educationalists that infest the MoE and many of our educational institutions, they'd have to be comatose to make things worse than they already are.

In saying that, I don't know anything about Erica Stanford. If Luxon thinks she's the bees knees then we should all be very concerned given his shocking track record of sticking to his guns when he gets a hard time from our media.

If Erica's serious about turning education around in this country her first job should be to cull the MoE of it's senior woke management and appoint the Right people to these posts.

I am very pessimistic about being able to change the MoE. They are so seeped in progressive ideology. I suggest we find alternative educational programmes. Bearing in mind everything , yes everything the MoE does so wrong and anything else could only be an improvement.

Teaching a child to read and compute basic arithmetic using traditional methods is easy enough with the enormous number of resources, many free, on the internet. The Australian Excel workbooks are excellent. Singapore maths is free on line. There are schools on line now as well. The home-schooled have usually been shown to out perform those in school. Since such a large proportion of kids are absent your child being kept home a couple of days a week to do school work would hardly be noticed. You really only need about two hours a day for homeschooling in the basics which means your kid can go to school in the afternoon for art etc.

When my kid was failing in basic arithmetic I kept him home, one day every week for a winter term using minor sore throats ,wee coughs, tiny headaches, anxiety attacks, visiting Grandparents .appointments unspecified, emotional tunny upsets etc as excuses. This was not totally honest but my child began excelling in maths which the school had no hope of achieving with their ridiculous methods.
His initial failure in Maths was causing all sorts of vague psychosomatic problems problems, anyway.

The ministry , in my eyes are a criminal agency , hellbent on destroying our precious children. Also they are the main recruiting agency for gangs in their totally failing methods which particularly target the underprivileged
.

I am very sorry to have to agree with you. New Zealand needs a re-build of MoE and NZQA. I know - because I worked at one of those places (appalling!) and interacted extensively with the other (dreadful).

Criminal? Guilty as charged! In my view, some of the people I met deserve time in the clink, taking porridge at His Majesty's expense. I kid you not!

Before that experience, I had no idea that adults could behave quite literally worse than pigs!

NCEA is the trojan horse that will destroy the quality of students churned out by the universities. UE requires NCEA math L1 10 credits & NCEA english L2 10 credits. this is irrespective of what students study as their major (unless a uni is brave enough to impose additional conditions). no uni wants to do that as fees-free allows them to trap the suckers until they are stuck. now failing students is traumatic for their mental well being, so everyone needs to be moved through the system irrespective of the performance. the end result of a college graduate with poor numeracy & literacy skills is appalling!
