David Farrar: Comparing rail projects

Readers will know labour was planning to spend between $15 and $29 billion on a 24 km light rail system in auckland that would have trains that go slower than cars.

For $14 billion China is constructing a 342 km high-speed rail line with a design speed of 350km/h!!

egypt for the same cost is developing an 850 km electrified line with a design speed of 250 km/hr.

David Farrar runs Curia Market Research, a specialist opinion polling and research agency, and the popular Kiwiblog where this article was sourced. He previously worked in the Parliament for eight years, serving two National Party Prime Ministers and three Opposition Leaders.

Presumably the Chinese project does not require any traffic management. And if it does what is their hourly rate for cone shepherds?

Population densities do not justify rail in NZ. Subsidies are massive.

But how much were China and Egypt paying their consultants ?
Maybe they didn't have so many taniwha that they had to compensate ?

Why bother with Auckland? A mismanaged saturated over hyped humid joke. One day it will explode- geological truth- although not soon enough imho. There are much nicer places in NZ to live.
