A backslider. I think we have all come across one or two of these in our lives. You know the type; The person who you thought you could count on but when push came to shove, well, he was nowhere to be seen!
Backsliding is to say one thing but to actually do something quite different. To revert to type and lapse into your old behaviour. To lower your standards or to lapse morally.
Now, a political backslider is another animal altogether! This person is quite the disingenuous and devious public figure!
One who engages in political backsliding is somewhat more threatening than your everyday, garden variety of backslider. This odious individual, the political backslider, is the politician who champions the public sentiment, campaigns on societal sensitivity and knowingly bows to social and special interest pressure.
But the key to Mr Political Backslider’s success is the ability to be perceived as the peoples politician while at the same time being able to disguise the real agenda, hide the true beliefs behind a carefully crafted, thin veil of public perception.
And there it is, the fundamental requirement of success for the political backslider, PERCEPTION!
Or more accurately, the ability to create a perception. To be perceived as one thing but in truth being another.
Once embedded in office, Mr Political Backslider begins the incremental erosion of the democratic process, commences the deterioration of political integrity and the minimisation of democratic values within the political system.
When democratically elected governments commence failing to deliver on political promises, failing to match their key campaign planks and disregard the majority, democracy begins experiencing a slow erosion.
Over the last decade political backsliding has become somewhat of a worldwide phenomenon. The most common reasonings of this, seemingly, ongoing wave of global political backsliding is that democracies are failing to adequately deliver the social and economic needs to their citizens. And that’s closely followed by the declining integrity of today’s politicians.
If the country is stalled, unable to progress, in fact you are not even standing still. Your country is regressing. That’s Political Regression!
Political regression is a time in which we find democracy undergoing a significant reversal. It is when either influential right or left wing politics coupled with disinformation, mainly emanating from the MSM, begin undermining our democratic foundations.
Issue upon issue, the economy, social cohesion and particularly for New Zealand, race, compound, resulting in decades of social stability being reversed.
Yes, elections still occur, people still vote but legislative and procedural changes make it harder to seriously challenge incumbents. This change usually occurs with small, incremental steps.
The road to electoral breakdown is dangerously deceptive. Elected and non elected parliamentarians maintain a veneer of democracy while hollowing out its substance. Many government efforts to subvert democracy are ‘legal,’ in the sense that they are approved by legislature or accepted by the courts.
Democracies failing to constrain the predatory political and ideological ambitions of political leaders find themselves backed into a corner.
Political backsliding gets serious when leaders begin pursuing their socio-political vision and an ideological agenda. As successive governments have, quietly and incrementally, allowed the erosion of democracy and political integrity, the more their need to exhibit a “pretence” of democracy.
UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer is an example of political backsliding. Starmer’s electioneering vow that Labour would be the “most pro-business government the UK has ever seen” saw many former Conservative Party donors turn to supporting Labour.
Pre election Starmer promised not to raise taxes on working people, then promptly hiked national insurance, the levy for social welfare and pensions, by billions. Is a levy a tax?
Starmer also clawed back the winter fuel allowance from pensioners! But hold on; Only to flip flop and reinstate following substantial voter pressure!
Starmer claims to be a man of integrity but all his many broken promises were carefully planned!
All part of Labour’s grand plan for re-election?
So, yes a political backslide. But Starmer is a mere amateur in the art political backsliding compared to Our Political Backslider!
Where was the guile? Where was the deception? Where was the false perception?
Starmer was simply engaging in breaking political promises. Any mug politician could do that!
That is decidedly different from Our Political Backslider!

That is decidedly different from Our Political Backslider!

Ours is a master of creating a perception. He is easily perceived as desiring one thing but in truth delivering another. Great is his ability to convey a false impression.
This form of deception is not readily identified because everything he said during the election campaign was actually a true statement in itself. However, it didn’t paint the full strategy or identity his intrigue. No where near it!
We were not privy to the hidden agenda. What he was not saying was the falsehood! What he didn’t want us to perceive.
So, what I am trying to illustrate is that those very narrow and defined statements around co-governance made by Our Political Backslider, statements made during the election campaign that were, in reality, cleverly designed to create an impression that National would be resolute on the cessation and removal of co-governance. All made without identifying his actual agenda of intending programmes, that we are now able to discern, are actually beneficial to Māori and would be given precedence!
Maori interests are now even further involved in decision-making, partnering with government in many of the functions of governance and exerting greater influence in the lives of the majority!
In New Zealand we are witnessing Our Political Backsliders grand, ideological design for New Zealand’s future coming to the fore. And that is a future that is drawing ever nearer!
The Political Backsliders inaction on the furtherance of Maori authority and control is there for all to see. You will never hear the Political Backslider actually admit it, but his small cadre within the coalition government is actively occupied on endorsing and furthering the Maori Sovereignty plan!
So strong was our desperation to rid ourselves of the six horrific Ardern/Hipkins years, statements like, “We are one country, we deliver our public services to people on the basis of need, not ethnicity.” And “we’re all equal under the law, one person, one vote” lulled us into believing the Political Backslider was going to, once elected, address the two serious matters voters were deeply concerned about –
- The very pressing need to right a very seriously listing economy
- The termination of all co governance and the suspension of policies and strategies designed to increase Maori jurisdiction and ascendancy.
In March 2022 Our Political Backslider stated “I think there is a real need for us to have a genuine, high-quality conversation around co-governance … when you don’t take the people with you, and you don’t frame up what it’s about, as a result you leave people behind and it drives more division.”
Have you heard a genuine, high-quality conversation around co-governance ever escape from the lips of Our Political Backslider? I certainly haven’t!
“…when you don’t take the people with you, and you don’t frame up what it’s about, as a result you leave people behind and it drives more division.” OMG. Wow! What ambiguity! That’s non delivery, right there!
“…when you don’t take the people with you … you leave people behind and it drives more division.” Well Political Backslider, huge numbers of us are getting left behind here! And, damn right, division is being created!
Our Political Backslider heads a government that not only lacks the fortitude to halt or even change the current trajectory of the increasing Maori influence and control but worst of all, he never had any intention of doing so!
And our political apathy allows him to get away with it!
Democracy is blighted and disfigured when a party gets elected to office and then subverts the will of the people all because they or their leader have an agenda to move the country in a very different direction!
You cannot escape the fact that Our Political Backslider has sanctioned and endorsed the Maori elite and their drive for sovereignty to the extent that there has been created a racial division, possibly now so deeply entrenched it will take decades to correct!
Remember the malevolent and destructive Public Interest Journalism Fund (PIJF) introduced by Ardern in 2021? Has that fund not suborned and corrupted the MSM to the extent that any vestige of objectivity and integrity was gutted and filleted out of the MSM!
Well, that monster is still alive and well, so we should be asking why.
The PIJF was legislated to run until 2026. Why didn’t our Political Backslider not simply remove such prejudicial and biased legislation?
Maybe, just maybe it was because it helped our Backsliders agenda!
But all is not lost; Our Political Backslider does have an achilles heel!
He will have heard of Newton’s Third Law that states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
I suggest Our Political Backslider has failed to take heed of said 3rd law.
Our Political Backslider is so complacent he is in total control that he is blinkered to the possibility the equal and opposite reaction to his action (or should that be inaction) would be a coup from within.
There will be a number of the Political Backsliders caucus and MP’s fully aware that the continuing downward trend of Our Political Backsliders popularity is going to see a few of them reading the Trade Me Jobs app come late 2026!
Maori elite contrive to attain Maori Sovereignty by 2040 and Our Political Backslider appears comfortable with that! To prevent even further advancement of those “leaders” achieving that goal we, first, must have a number of the Political Backsliders MP’s find a backbone. Find a backbone and do what we elected them to do, govern for all citizens and maintain democracy!
We then need them to look among themselves for a voice.
A voice that has chosen a political career to actually make a positive difference for New Zealand, a voice that does not see political leadership as a check box on a CV. A voice that does not see political leadership as a stepping stone to “higher honours”! A voice that is attuned to the needs of the country, a voice that will stand resolute in the face of extreme vilification!
New Zealand is, at an ever increasing pace, heading towards some sort of 3rd world Ethno state, a state where tribal factionalism would prevail, where so called Maori “leaders” scuffle over the country’s capital like buzzards fighting over a dead animals carcass, where your rights and the distribution of wealth, power and control are dispensed according to your lineage, where ownership of property is determined by force.
New Zealand must wake up! Wake up to the glaring reality that we need a government that has no qualms about stating Maori are perfectly capable of standing on their own two feet, a government that believes Maori have actually been advantaged by colonisation, a government that believes Maori are not some special race that requires and deserves financial, political and social advantage bestowed upon them, a government that believes that all the ethnicities that make up the fabric of New Zealand society are ONE PEOPLE!
Maori culture we can embrace, Maori rule we cannot!
OUR POLITICAL BACKSLIDER MUST GO!

- Entrenched public ownership with the marine and coastal area act and reinstated the very tough condition for customary rights.
- Removed the maori health authority
- Restored public ownership of our water.
Not enough for you?
I suspect Luxons wealth insulates him from the problems of everyday New Zealanders. This, as well as the fact he was based overseas when the Maorification issue was beginning to divide us into two groups. His knowledge of our history seems quite limited and he isn't prepared to listen to the group that say sovereignty was ceded to the British Crown and then most importantly, reunite us as one people( even though he acknowledged in parliament that sovereignty was ceded). So, he is actually a fence-sitter but to be fair, does have attributes suitable to any successful CEO.
I think he is a successful person in his own right but we desperately need something much more than this at our present point in history to counteract the belligerence shown by The Greens and The Maori Party.
Having said this., the alternative, Labour et al creeping up in the polls,....yikes!!
Agree 100%. Luxon carefully controlled his narrative to create an appealing perception, whilst intentionally lying by omission. God may forgive him, but I hope the voters don’t. Frankly I also hope there is deep dissension behind closed doors in National as they look to the 2026 elections. Be very aware too that Winston has consistently utilised similarly misleading campaign tactics for decades - calculatedly pushing popular buttons to great applause out on the trail, but delivering precious little once he’s over the 5% and in for another term, preferably with his choice of political partner - even when that choice is not ours! It’s not particularly hard to identify these problems. What is hard is to do much about it. National isn’t listening or even interested in our opinions. Whatever influence we can muster and our votes are our best weapons. Talk a lot and vote wisely. If you can, support your preferred party/organisations (e.g. NZCPR!), financially and/or by volunteering. Try not to let the b*stards grind you down. If all else fails, emigrate. What else is there?
still a long long long way to go!!
Yes the PBIC (Political Backslider In Chief) has moved in a few areas, repeat a few but only when forced to. For a while I have been beating a drum about Luxon’s Waitangi Day speech to Ngai Tahu. There are some questionable remarks in the speech.
Check out the point where he suggests Government should step aside. Also: “Today is a time to think about the New Zealand we want in 2040 - when today's kids become adults, and we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Treaty.”
Is Luxon all in on Labour’s He Puapua ??

Ok so we can vote on Maori wards but local govt can bypass the outcome by appointing iwi reps with voting rights to committees etc, so no need for wards you will get ''Maori'' wards by other means . Checkmated by local councils that seem driven by Lab-Green-TMP oriented members and those in fear of threats, screaming and yelling etc
Balanced - In what way did Luxo entrench public ownership of the MACA? In what way did Luxo restore public ownership of our water?
Governments can tinker as much as they like around the ever present Māori issue, but untill all New Zealanders, be they part Māori or not, are afforded equal status, our partial democracy will never be all it could be.
Our doom was sealed when there were 112 votes cast against and only 11 for David Seymour's treaty principles bill earlier this year.
There was a golden opportunity squandered. Where was the National party then mr/ms Balanced.
Please don't explain how simplistic the concept was.
We all know what the original Treaty actually said.
In what way did he separate the Maori out of education? Un/balanced must be a National troll under the bridge of misinformation.
Very dangerous remarks re. 2040 - sounds like HP/tribal rule is his target.
A referendum - democracy or ethnocracy - is urgent. Now!
Love it.
There is no better sign my facts have struck a chord than a Labour spin doctor calling me petty childish names.
It's a pity breaking views authors research to avoid writing nonsense.
Or are the gangs, banks, supermarkets and electricity company beneficiaries paying a "get Luxon" stipend in an attempt to avoid losing their Cosy little numbers?
Two years on and I still don't know Christopher Luxon!
“If the problems you have this year are the same problems you had last year, then you are not a leader. You are rather a problem on your own that must be solved.”

The focus on Luxon in these comments rather than the agreed Coalition Agreement makes me think Labour Party activists are causing mischief.
Yes, I agree with most of the above and "balanced" seems to be getting ahead of himself/herself. As anon@3.55 comments, where is this purported separation given ETAB(2); the MACA issue is still far from resolved; why are we still hearing mention of te mana o te wai, tikanga and matauranga etc.; and, what is happening in the control of our conservation estates? Humpty Dumpty needs to stay home, get off the wall, and read the bloody room!
That said, full marks to Minister Goldsmith for saying we're "uncomfortable" with the non-ceding of sovereignty issue. If Iwi want the largesse of the Crown, they need to respect the latter's mana/ sovereignty without question - period! Anything less is not 'in the utmost good faith' and, hence, they can (and most certainly should) whistle.
Isn't Luxon just auditioning for Chippy's job. He would make a great Labour Party leader.
Anon 6.45
I think you will find that most of us who are so concerned with Luxon's lack of action are ex National voters.
Never voted left, all we want is some balance in the middle.
