DTNZ: Luxon invited to join Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ for Gaza

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has been invited to take part in a new US-led initiative on Gaza, with President Donald Trump proposing the creation of a “board of peace” as Washington looks to move beyond the current ceasefire.

A draft charter for the body, which would be chaired by Trump, has been circulated to a select group of world leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Argentine President Javier Milei, according to reporting by Bloomberg. The total number of countries approached has not been disclosed.

A spokesperson for Luxon said the prime minister welcomed the start of what has been described as the next phase of the Gaza peace process and confirmed he had received an invitation to join the board, which he would consider carefully.

Under the proposed framework, participating countries would be represented directly by their heads of government and appointed for a term of up to three years. Bloomberg reported that any country seeking to remain on the board beyond that period would be required to make a financial contribution of US$1 billion to support its work.

And, hopefully Luxon does not participate beyond the three years - from where will the one billion dollars come to continue participation. Money so better spent within NEW ZEALAND.

One also reflects that staying focussed on the challenges within NEW ZEALAND, will be of greater benefit for our Country than participating in an international project probably destined to fail. Satanyahoo will probably take care of that failure.

The last paragraph sticks in the craw. It doesn’t appear to be value for money and Luxon needs to ensure his ego doesn’t affect his decision making.

Fantastic idea from the only man on the planet qualified to win the FIFA peace prize (TM). We might even get protection as long as we can keep up with the subscription increases. Any nation who doesn’t sign up to this is woke and anti-peace.

Anything with Trump in charge, as chair, will be a disaster. Full stop.

Is it ridiculous to propose that Luxon, as PM, should be putting all his energy into getting NZ out of the deep and muddy hole Labour left us in?

If such a letter actually exists then MFAT would be correct in doing the diplomatic equivalent of dropping it in the wastepaper basket. No reply necessary. This country has no vital interests to defend in Gaza and besides, while Jacinda Adern may have jumped at the opportunity to interfere, Luxon already has a full-time day job.But there's no point in upsetting the Orange One by refusing outright. So just let that letter be lost in the post. Perhaps Vladimir Putin will step up to fill the gap since he seems to have received one too.

This is a race based issue.
Luxon doesn't understand NZ's race issues

Great idea !
If only Luxon would go onto this committee full time and leave running NZ to someone who understands democracy.
