The Herald reports:
A bicultural overhaul of Army doctrine that features Māori cosmology at its core has led to a Government revolt, with the NZ Defence Force putting on hold part of the controversial programme.
The NZ Army’s new “general orders” to soldiers uses a pantheon of te ao Māori gods as guiding influences for its strategy “to achieve a bicultural status by enabling the recognition of Māori cultural interests as they are guaranteed within Te Tiriti o Waitangi”.
The Herald has confirmed Defence Minister Judith Collins only learned of the new doctrine after coalition partners Act then NZ First raised objections with her.
This shows how entrenched the view is in Wellington that absolutely every aspect of public life must be tied to the Treaty. What is astonishing is that the Minister finds out through MPs, rather than the NZ Defence Force.
I think part of the problem is all these agencies are headquartered in Wellington where 95% of the people they talk to share this view. We should shift Defence HQ to say Christchurch or Auckland to try and dewokify them.
The order introduced the Cultural Skills Framework, the section NZDF says is on hold, which set expectations for personnel at every leadership level. Those included understanding the Treaty of Waitangi, engaging with Māori communities, practising tikanga and developing te reo Māori.
For leaders in the Army, it said they should know at least two waiata, pronounce te reo Māori words correctly and have “beginner’s use” of te reo Māori. That included being able to “interact in predictable exchanges” using te reo Māori.
Those looking to “level up” would “read about Māori values, beliefs and history” and attend immersion language programmes.
So to be promoted in the Armed Forces you need to know all about the Treaty, be able to sign waiata, have good te reo pronunciation and be knowledgeable about Maori gods.
I suspect the ones who would find this most idiotic are the many NZDF soldiers (not officers) who are Maori.

And we are told He Puapua is now shelved? Army, nurses, pharmacists, law schools.......clearly not so.
Would need to be 50% maori cosmology and 50% non-maori cosmology for true biculturalism. Bi implies one other culture eligible (and implies that maori culture 100% homogeneous).
I want my soldiers ready and willing to defend a home they love, one that they are free to love - and be trained to do so with the equipment they need. I don’t want them to feel as though a culture they might normally be proud to be associated with and fight alongside mates who might feel closer association to that culture- now suddenly have that culture rammed down their throats. How to send a big chunk of your fighting forces packing to Oz where they are better paid and endure a lot less wokery!
Apart from interests in anthropology, why otherwise would anyone want to know about Maori values, much less have them indoctrinated in our Defence Force in the 21st century? After all, it can't be because Maori culture was, and is, an unbridled success? Unless, the practice of harming and killing their own children has some military benefit, or is it perhaps the reciting of incantations and the pulling of faces and poking out of tongues that has some inherent protective merit?
Nope, the Defence Chief (and her husband) have been sucking on the Kool-aid teat of 'woke' at all our expense. These 'General Orders' need to be gone, as too those that authored them - for their judgement is clearly wanting, in a service where the sound execution of such is both pivotal and critical.
Haha, just when you think you've seen and heard it all.
Incredibly common soldiers are expected to know about the Treaty, meaning the current maori interpretation of. Yet Jainda could not even recall the three basic principles.
By parity of reasoning, all government should be relocated out of woke Wellington.
" ... to achieve a bicultural status by enabling the recognition of Māori cultural interests as they are guaranteed within Te Tiriti o Waitangi”.
I pride myself on being highly literate in English and also have a couple of bits of paper hanging on the wall which say that I know a bit about international law including treaties....... and I'm damned if I can read any of that into the ToW of 1840.
This is just a damned lie, no more and no less!
Mr. Farrar also states that although he advises clients on the relative merits of questions, ultimately he will accept the question if the client insists. This is a particular
risk where the client is lobbying for a particular outcome.
Yeah and now we hear there’s a load of the same brand of abhorrent indoctrination proposed for our doctors too along with “equity” obligations and implications that the system is inherently “unfair”. The BS is rampant. Multitudes of wokester progressives beavering away. Ardern’s legacy.
Exactly right, Barend.
The Treaty is a simple document. In summary it says:-
1/ Maori cede sovereignty.
2/ Maori keep their property.
3/ Maori get British citizenship.
There is NOTHING there that requires "enabling the recognition of Māori cultural interests as they are guaranteed within Te Tiriti o Waitangi”.
If ever there was evidence a moronic Wellington Public Service needed a major overhaul this has to be it. Is this administration capable of cleaning out these people? I doubt Luxon et al up for the fight!
Steve Ellis
What did that woman expect to come from such an order ?
Was she thinking that Maori was going to be the operating language of our military services ?
How did she think that NZ Inc was going to benefit ?
Did she honestly think she was going to get away with making te reo compulsory ?
Definitely shows a severe lack of judgment, which should be a sackable offense.
Not fit to be in command.
Judith Collins, show some guts, don't just pause it, condemn it outright, sack the instigator, and stop it now.
Then compensate any staff who have had their careers affected by this racist bullshit.
Was mandating te reo maori written into of Army Major General Rose King job description ?
Who appointed her ?
Sounds like yet another false DEI implementation.
This is insane.
As a Christian I could not participate in prayers or songs to Maori gods nor see any value in being compelled to learn Te Reo.
It is a violation of my freedom of religion and you achieve equity not by being immersed in Maori culture but being taught well in educational basics of literacy and numeracy.
This is Marxism indoctrination being imposed on army recruits by insisting on animistic religious rituals.
Judith Collins appointed her. I think Judith has lost the plot. She’s made some strange choices in this, her final term of govt.
I was on the staff of ACDS OPS in 1982 when along with thousands of others we worked under the Chief of Defence Staff The Lord Lewin. I think both he and my boss would have happily have brought back the cat o' nine tails for this pair of miscreants. Maggie Thatcher would have given it the seal of approval. Whatever, neither would have been in post the following day!
