Because that's what's just happened.
The National Party has announced, completely unexpectedly, with nobody getting a heads-up that this was coming, that it wants to break up Foodstuffs into two separately owned businesses. One would be Pak'n'Save and the other would combine New World and Four Square.
It won't be forcing any owners to sell their businesses because, by the way, these businesses are owned by Kiwi owner-operators. They're not going to be forced to sell. But they are going to be forced to move with their chosen brand.
Now, if what the National Party wanted was a water-cooler announcement, you know, the kind that gets so much attention everybody ends up talking about it at the water cooler, then they got it.
And for all the wrong reasons.
Because this is completely bonkers. Especially because it comes from a party that should know better: the National Party.
Now, I'm not defending supermarket prices here. I'm not saying it's okay that you're paying $300 to $400 a week just to feed your family. But what I am saying is that the Nats pushing the red button and going nuclear here may actually be worse.
Think about what this is going to do to confidence in investing in this country. Who is going to put serious money into business in New Zealand if this is the kind of country that just goes around splitting up corporates?
And it's not theoretical to say this is going to have a chilling effect. We know it will.
We're still trying to convince oil and gas companies to bring their money back into this country and back into the gas sector after Jacinda Ardern announced the oil and gas exploration ban. That was eight years ago and there is still no sign that confidence is returning.
It takes decades to undo this kind of damage.
Even having the so-called business-friendly party in New Zealand discussing a policy like this is damaging our international reputation right now.
And is it worth it?
Is it worth it?
Have a guess how much money this is going to save you each week when it's finally baked in at the end of the process.
Maybe $3.80.
$3.80 a week.
For all of this.
Is it worth it?
No. Of course it's not.
This is an incredibly damaging idea for apparently very little gain.
As you can imagine, I've had countless texts and conversations about this since it was announced. And the one that sums it up best is this:
"New Zealand is not a serious country anymore."

Do you believe Nats/Willis will break up the supermarkets when they're practically in bed with them? Do you believe the Nats won't raise taxes when the NZ Treasury confirms it must in its 2025 Long Term Fiscal Forecasts? Do you believe Seymour will abolish the Waitangi Tribunal? Do you believe Opportunity will put in a land tax? Do you believe Te Pati Maori will abolish Parliamentary sovereignty? Do you believe Labour that its capital tax will be its only new tax? We all know politicians lie. But NZ Election 2026 takes lying to a whole new level. Our MPs have broken all public trust and respect in Parliament & turned their jobs into a mockery. They're equally desperate and will say anything to keep power. Barely anyone can stand the two woeful Chris's, Willis, the whole inept bunch of them, but equally we have nowhere to turn.
And yet this government do nothing to reign out of control over payed and underworked beauracracy , me thinks the citizens would be far better off fiscally if that and other wasteful spending was addressed , but then again that would lose too many votes
Somehow The Warehouse retail grocery effort never gets a mention.
They already had processes, staff and outlets in place. But their success has been muted.
Can anyone seriously think the greens can do better?
No, it is just vote fishing. Same the misguided Nats.
How will National get this passed with ACT not supporting it? Will they go to a party of the left for support?

Under this article is a posted comment, by a "person" who states they have worked int his domain.
And as part of that comment, they state that Foodstuffs is 'the least of our problems', but Woolworth is. Being Australian owned (from my recollection was a NZ entity, to which the then Govt [of the day] allowed the Aussie's, to once again, raid our shores and buy a NZ [then owned & operated] business.
- The Warehouse - [also see K said @ 8:01AM] - Stephen Tindal made an effort to open, within The Red Shed's, a grocery outlet, as he saw, then, that we had a duoply [then] and the 'kickback' from the then 2 main outlets was staggering. The idea was shelved, till recently.
Now, with above, did the NZ MSM at the time, or even the Govt of day, step up, step in and make an attempt to "level the playing field" - NAH.
- Nicola Willis - has been down this road previously, was anything reviewed started, oh yes we got an inept dude to be the Head Grocery Guy, has he done anything ?? - NAH.
Also what I find interesting, is Ms Willis was "absent from the tennis court" when Fonterra was selling off the 'family jewelry'[their premium cheese & butter label] to which I bet a can of Wattie's Bake Beans (be quicky they may not be around anytime soon) that she "knew all along what was to take place, but did she do anything to stop it - NAH.
I will state with conviction, come 7th November - we will have at the Polling Booths >
