High Court upholds Waitangi Tribunal recommendations on land and compensation for Māori

The Waitangi Tribunal did not overstep its legal jurisdiction when recommending the Crown return Mangatū forest land and financially compensate Māori, the High Court has found.

Following more than two decades of hearings and reports relating to claims the Crown breached Te Tiriti o Waitangi across the Tūranga (Poverty Bay) district, the Waitangi Tribunal released its recommendations report, titled the Mangatū Remedies Report, in 2021.

But Ms Willis says people need to read the whole speech, which was carefully thought out description of what the crown and iwi leaders may have been trying to achieve.

What an excellent idea. I think local Maori should buy the Sonning carpark site and develop it as a 'peace park.' Somehow though, I expect their eagerness for such a proposal might rapidly dissipate if they have to foot the bill.

re 16th. I cannot imagine a worse job than being Auditor General trying to track expenditure by maori for maori. if they had known about Whanau Ora even Tuhoe would have signed the Treaty and eagerly ceded sovereignty.

re 17th. The intention of Massey University to give great emphasis to the Treaty will greatly simpliy the choice of university for many.

The criticism of Luxon describing the Treaty as an experiment was petty at best. There has been little similar before or since. The argument that it was an experiment more then matches the oppsite. It would make a great subject for university debate. Anything not positively established to work or not is an experiment. (It is now a failing experiment) The Left regularly make outrageous statements which the msm allow to pass pass without murmur.
