Centrist: New Zealand is one of the top destinations for immigrants in the OECD

New Zealand stands out among OECD countries, with 27% of its population being foreign-born, one of the highest shares globally. This ranks New Zealand fourth, following Luxembourg (50%), Switzerland (31%), and Australia (29%).

New Zealand’s position in the OECD is part of a broader trend in migration, where smaller, high-income countries are attracting large shares of foreign-born residents.

The country’s openness contrasts sharply with more homogenous OECD members like Japan (2%) and Mexico (1%). This shift aligns with New Zealand’s growing reliance on immigration to support its workforce and economy.
