Ele Ludemann: No ute tax

An email from the Rural Nats clears up the issue of a fringe benefit tax on utes:

Nobody backs Kiwi farmers more than National.

We want to make that crystal clear, because there’s been a couple of misinformed stories floating around about new taxes coming for utes.

This is absolutely not true.

Farmers and tradies are the backbone of New Zealand’s economy.

To be clear, we will NOT be hitting Kiwis with any new taxes on utes – full stop. And that includes changing fringe benefit tax.

Our hardworking rural communities are driving this country’s economic recovery, and we want to set them up to succeed.

That’s why we binned Labour’s ute tax immediately, and it’s why we’re making it cheaper to buy new work vehicles. I encourage everyone to check out our Investment Boost policy, which would allow farmers, tradies and other businesses to write-off a big chunk of any new asset they buy.

We back our farmers, and we’ll continue to do so.
Rural Nats

No new tax and not change to the fringe benefit tax.

That’s as it should be from a government committed to reducing compliance costs and encouraging businesses to grow.

Ele , your article, to me, seems to be painting the ute FBT cancellation as some sort of National win.
Nothing could be further from the truth. There many questions that need asking. Among them are: why did Simon Watts ask officials to investigate the tax in the first place? Will he be sacked for such gross stupidity? How come Luxon apparently knew nothing about it? Why doesn't Watts just bugger off to the Greens taking Paul Goldsmith with him? Both have such stellar levels of incompetence that they would fit in nicely.
Answers on a postcard please.

Was Luxon sleeping when Caucas discussed this. It shows, not for the first time Luxon doesn’t know what is going on. e.g
Prior to departing NZ the other day he was asked whether embassy staff in Tehran would be on their way home. His the reply was along the lines he didn’t see the need. Next day Winston announced the embassy was closed and two families were leaving with the help of the Aussies. One would have expected Luxon would be up to speed on this.
Or have they sidelined Luxon, allowing him to concentrate on free trade agreements etc. Is Peters, Seymour, Bishop and Willis in charge?
