DTNZ: Government pours $1.2m into cow gadget to ‘fix climate’

The Government has announced a $1.2 million investment in a Canterbury start-up’s wearable device for cows, claiming it could slash nitrous oxide emissions by 95% and nitrate leaching by 93%.

Ministers Nicola Willis and Shane Reti praised the invention as proof of Kiwi ingenuity and a step toward “low-emissions farming.”

The “AgriZeroNZ” programme has already channelled $191 million into similar projects — from “methane vaccines” to probiotics.

“Research and development drive productivity and high-value jobs. Our goal is a system that empowers world-class scientists, universities, and research organisations to turn ideas into market-ready solutions”, said Reti.

“Our ambition is to drive a relentless focus on commercialisation and economic impact to meet the needs of a future-ready economy.”

Does it attach to a human's rear end?
That's where most of the methane is generated.
Most of the bullshit in world is generated at the inlet end of the human alimentary canal.
Not sure how to fix that without dramatic change to our free society.

What has the return been on that $192 million? I would think not a lot. Let the market invest in these ideas and businesses if they are so transformational. Politicians trying to pick winners.

That work is a complete waste of money and I am surprised that science groups can be sucked in by what amounts to 'snake-oil' chicanery. The only reason scientists would prostrate themselves at the altar of false science is for money, although it is entirely possible they are just as credulous as their paymasters.

Solar Zero will be the tip of the iceberg (so to speak).

Both Ministers promoting this have obviously little farming experience. Has any actually asked if the cows want to wear this device? How is it going to be attached? More wasted money on an impractical pet feel=good greeny project
