David Farrar: Violent crime continue to plummet

This should be the major news story of the week, or month. The massive increase in violent crime under Labour has not just reversed, but has dropped to another low according to the latest crime data.

In the year July 23 to Jun 24 there were 215,000 NZers who were victims of violent crime. This was an increase of 53,000 over two years earlier. This is what happens when the Government has a policy of reducing the prison population by 30% regardless of crime levels.

But since that peak of 215,000, the number of victims of violent crime has dropped by 79,000 to 136,000. Almost 80,000 fewer NZers were bashed or raped or assaulted. Of course Labour has opposed almost every law change made by the National-led Government to toughen up law & order.

This is a 37% drop in violent crime victims in under two years.

David Farrar runs Curia Market Research, a specialist opinion polling and research agency, and the popular Kiwiblog where this article was sourced. He previously worked in the Parliament for eight years, serving two National Party Prime Ministers and three Opposition Leaders

The argument being made here appears to be that " Government ... policy of reducing the prison population by 30% regardless of crime levels" 'causes' an increase in the rate of violent crime.
I place the word 'causes' in inverted commas as this association does not present us with any mechanism through which the outcome is achieved. There is an assumption at work that X 'causes' Y but no testable mechanism is offered and so the assertion cannot be verified.
People who hit us with crude numbers appear to tacitly assume that they are informing the astute reader about 'what is going on out there' but in fact in mechanistic terms they are not, and we are none the wiser about what is actually 'going on'.

Yes, David - this should have been reported as the major news story of the week or month.
However the mainstream media in New Zealand are all so biassed to the Left, that any positive news like this is quietly ignored.

All signs point to Ardern, yet again. The state is not blameless here

Now, this should be put to Ginny Anderson for an explanation, given she seems to have a lot to say these days and who became Minister of Police about the time that graph really took off. But, I suspect her silence will be deafening.
