Government Commits $8.6m To Build New Plymouth’s First City Marae In More Than 150 Years
The Government will invest up to $8.6 million to help build a new marae in central New Plymouth, ending more than 150 years without a marae for Ngāti Te Whiti in its own rohe.
Regional Development Minister Shane Jones and Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka announced the funding on Saturday, saying the project would create a permanent cultural, community and emergency hub in Moturoa near the city’s waterfront and coastal walkway.
The funding comes from the Regional Infrastructure Fund and will support construction of Ngāmotu Marae, a $17.8 million project being delivered by the Ngāti Te Whiti Whenua Tōpu Trust.....
