Richard Prebble: Interesting electorate races - Wellington North

My old electorate, Wellington Central, is now Wellington North, gaining the traditionally right-leaning suburbs of Khandallah, Ngaio and Wadestown.

Suburbs that once elected me, an ACT MP.

Wellington North is one of the country’s highest-income electorates. It should be National.

National’s candidate, Jonathan Pitts, has an impressive CV. Yet polling places him a distant third.

The contest is too close to call between the Greens’ Tamatha Paul on 35.2 per cent and Labour’s Ayesha Verrall on 32.6 per cent.

Why?

Wellington was once not just the capital but New Zealand’s commercial headquarters.

Today Wellington is a one-industry town – government.

Home to an unaffordable public service.

Wellington’s public servants administer the country but elect a council that cannot administer their city. The water pipes leak and sewage is dumped into the sea.

Labour, once the party of the working man, is now the party of the public service.

Wellington voters believe Labour’s capital gains tax and the Greens’ wealth tax will be paid by the rest of the country to fund more public servants.

Whoever wins Wellington North, it is bad news for taxpayers.

The Honourable Richard Prebble CBE is a former member of the New Zealand Parliament. Initially a member of the Labour Party, he joined the newly formed ACT New Zealand party under Roger Douglas in 1996, becoming its leader from 1996 to 2004. This article was sourced HERE
