Te Kawerau ā Maki history brought to life through tomokanga at new childcare centre
A significant milestone was marked at BestStart Childcare Centre in Te Oneroa o Kahu (Long Bay) this week with the official unveiling of a new tomokanga.
Designed to permanently embed local Māori history into the facility, the structure addresses long-standing gaps in early childhood education regarding the North Shore’s distinct tribal heritage.
By grounding migrant families and local children alike in the histories of Maki, Te Kawerau ā Maki, and the guardians of the coast, the centre is establishing a model for how early learning facilities can partner directly with tangata whenua to build genuine community relationships....

If the Long Bay Play Centre operates entirely free of state subsidy (including wages) then it is free to fritter hours on largely irrelevant lineage. But has very little to do with the formation of and operation of latter day Long Bay. A 19th Century maori craft person , or any art authority, would be mystified by the curious frilly style of the barge board design. I trust the fair boy will prove sufficiently astute to later milk his maori connection and tiresome play centre indoctrination for some paid advisory sinecure sufficient to compensate for the years of second rate recognition his blue eyes will likely attract.
