Perspective with Heather du Plessis-Allan: Will Mamdani be the next big thing or the next big disappointment?

I think I am more interested in seeing how Zohran Mamdani goes than any other Democrat that I can remember in a very, very, very long time, because I genuinely am not sure if this is gonna go brilliantly for him. And he's the next big thing, or he's the next big disappointment, because there is no way, is there? Like, no way at all he's gonna be able to do everything that he's promised. I mean, he might be able to do a rent freeze in New York City. Sure, that's an easy thing to do. That's a stroke of a pen. Off you go. But it might backfire. Like it might lead to fewer housing units being added, which ultimately makes the problem worse.

He can pick something else to do. He could do free childcare, hugely expensive. He could add a 2% tax on incomes over $1 million, but he may find those incomes start disappearing from his city. Either way, he's gonna have to pick some of his pet projects and go with just a few of them, because doing absolutely everything is just not gonna happen. And that's gonna lead to disappointment surely for the voters who truly believe he can do all these things.

My gut though says that the disappointment will not be great, because if there's one thing we learned from Donald Trump, it's that breaking promises doesn't actually really matter that much if you represent something to voters. Donald Trump represented the anti-establishment, so people stuck with him even when he broke his promises. Mamdani represents the anti-Trump, so I think people will stick with him even if he breaks his promises.

I actually suspect, by the way, that this is going to be very good for Donald Trump. I think he's going to love having Mamdani around because he will be able to use everything that Mamdani does to berate him and the Democrats. Every time a promise is broken, he's going to, because Mamdani is the opposite of him, right? So Mamdani just becomes the bad guy in all of his stories from here on and he pumps himself up.

However this goes for Mamdani, I think we can all agree this is now turning into a must-see show.

He's a socialist. I think we can all guess how things will turn out.

and his experience in this new environment is nil.

We’ve already seen with Trump and Luxon that if you elect someone with no experience in politics, it is a dumpster fire for society, the economy, and quality of life. So it will be with this young fella, he’ll be out of his depth and it’ll result in a right ol’ mess.

Meanwhile career politicians like Saint Cindy had plenty of experience in politics, and none in the real world. And that went well for us...

I agree with Heather on this one, experience is gold.

Case in point, Dame Jacinda’s leadership and experience took New Zealand through the same pandemic as other nations and we ended up well ahead of the median on pretty much any empirical measure you pick. If only Luxon had the experience to get the economy in order, instead of running it into the ground while tax dollars go back into the coffers of landlords and tobacco companies!

When will Simeon Brown make his play for the National Party leadership?

I am not sure if the Author of this article has 'delved' deeper into the recent New York City elections for Mayor - but post election media commentary has shown -
- that there is questionable aspects as to 'funded" his campaign and there is a belief that one 'group' will (if they have not already)
enforce their "requirement" to gain access to the more sensitive posts within the Mayor's Council.
- that during 'his campaign' - we was remiss with certain aspects of statements he made, to the point of "refuting" with one TV media Host that even said what she was alluding to.
- post election, he has now very clearly stated what is 'action plan' is - the wording in total contrast to what he stated on the campaign trail.
" it is being touted as The Mask is off" - he is now showing his true colours".
- also what was concerning element was the endorsement by the Gov of New York State, an unelected person (her credibility is questionable) - who replaced Andrew Cuomo. when he was publicly removed from office.
Prior to the election process commencing, many Conservative media made the statement if Mamdani won, many would leave New York City and now they are reiterating those words.
New York City has major problems that the past 2 Mayor's could not or would not confront and one of them denigrated The New York Police, to the extent that many officer's "walked".
There is a suggestion, that if legal means can not remove this new Mayor, then there maybe no further "Legal" elections for that post, the perception is Mamdani being a socialist will create "a mini " dictatorship within the State of New York, if this is achieved then watch Illinois follow, then California.

Look at what happened in Gore previously with the young inexperienced man trying to tell his seniors how to run the town.

His voters are expressing their disgust with the grotesque income differences in the US and the immensely corrupt political system. It is unlikely he will achieve his goals but we should all pay attention to what his voters are thinking.
