The Kaupapa Ward
In 1914 traditional medicines and practices were used by Māori to treat illness, and they were cared for in their homes. Today, Māori have both clinical and cultural support in a dedicated Kaupapa Ward, the only one of its kind in New Zealand.

Ward 2A at Tauranga Hospital is the Kaupapa Ward, which was established in 1990 to meet the clinical and cultural needs of Māori patients. It is an acute ward for medical, respiratory, diabetes and cardiac care.

The Kaupapa ward, which is the only one of its kind in New Zealand, has clinically trained staff and can also provide access to Te Reo, and tikanga best practice.

The Ward started with with four beds, and has increased to 10-12 beds dedicated to Māori with the ability to flex to 22 bed if required.......

Māori strategy needed for prison peace
One of the kaumatua who helped negotiate an end to the riot at Waikeria Prison says it highlights the urgency of implementing the Hōkai Rangi Māori strategy throughout the prison system.

Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi, who accompanied the inmates as they surrendered, says Sunday’s resolution was a Māori solution to a Pākeha problem.

“Gangs are marginalised by society. We did not have gangs before colonisation, before the 1950s,” he says.

Racism and inequity target of new project to 'accelerate' Māori student achievement
A new community-led kaupapa to address racism and inequity in schools and early learning centres has been developed by Māori for Māori, Professor Mere Berryman of the University of Waikato said in a statement today.

The purpose of the initiative, known as Te Hurihanganui, is to accelerate Māori student achievement and wellbeing.......

Shelly Bay battle costing Wellington ratepayers more than 800k as bill continues to climb

Cassels bought most ot the land from Wellington iwi Taranaki Whānui – a subgroup of which opposes the sale and is leading an occupation at the bay – then the council recently in favour of selling and leasing the remainder of the land needed for the development.

Anaru Mepham, from the group Mau Whenua, which is leading the occupation, said occupiers aimed to reverse the council land-sale vote.

Occupiers planned to increase their size and take more “direct action” in the coming weeks, Mepham said......
