Many will recall this Yes Minister episode about how there was a very good hospital with only one problem – no patients.
A brand new surgical building the size of a provincial hospital is sitting empty on the grounds of North Shore Hospital, its opening delayed and no new date set.
There are lights on and hospital beds in place in the four storey, 150-bed TÅtara Haumaru building, but it could be months before there are patients.
You would have thought that during the many years of construction for the new surgical building, someone would have been recruiting staff so it would not just sit there empty for the best part of a year!

So even even with staff there needs to be patients and, while there are potentially lots of those, they still have to be admitted. Everyone is terribly busy, just like with our 30%-odd increase in public servants what more are we actually achieving? Sir Humphrey would be both impressed and delighted.

I wonder if the same fate awaits the new wing at Manukau Super Clinic when it is completed.
Lights on, no patients, admin and management staff only.
