Why the Greens' soft-on-crime ideology is dangerous, deluded, and downright insulting to ordinary New Zealanders
Tamatha Paul, the Green MP and self-appointed spokesperson for the “defund the police” generation, has once again gone viral for all the wrong reasons. In a rambling monologue uploaded by the ACT Party to X, she attacked efforts to clamp down on violent crime, defended shoplifters, and dismissed public safety concerns as if they were a minor inconvenience in her activist utopia

According to Paul, fining people for shoplifting is “stupid and cruel.” Apparently, holding people accountable for theft is now offensive. In her world, stealing is no longer a crime, it's a cry for help. Oh, and those who dare to want law and order? They’re just part of a system that “criminalises the poor.” Paul is clearly more interested in protecting offenders than victims, branding sensible policies like tougher sentences for coward punches and protections for first responders as “bullshit announcements.” It’s astonishing, she views violent thugs and serial offenders as misunderstood, while painting police as villains.
She doubles down by fantasising about police abolition and criticises a “heavier visual presence” of officers, claiming it makes people feel “on edge.” What she fails to mention is that it’s not police who make people uneasy – it’s the rising crime, ram raids, and repeat offenders roaming our streets that make people scared. If anything, the presence of police is a comfort to ordinary Kiwis who are fed up with lawlessness.
Her arrogance is jaw-dropping. “I don't actually care what you think because the people are with me,” she declares smugly. The truth is, most New Zealanders are not with her. They want safer streets, real consequences for crime, and MPs who care more about victims than TikTok likes. Tamatha Paul represents the worst instincts of the modern Left – prioritising ideology over common sense, and criminals over community safety.

Nothing new here. Tamatha Paul and her Green mates on the WCC then Parliament have been saying this for a long time. They're made a complete mess of Wellington and now they want to make a bigger mess of the country.
Ironically, while theft against businesses is OK, they're the first to call the Police if anyone does anything against them that they don't like.
You have to wonder about the sanity of the woman! So much for people of high qualifications and calibre governing our country.
Shoplifting and Greens - just mention Golriz.
Is Tamatha Paul too stupid for even the Green Party?
Thanks matua. People why are we so 'soft' on lunatics like Tabatha Paul. We should be holding them to account for the mess they create and certainly treating them like they want to be treated, with no respect at all. We are far to nice to these far left radicals who are only interested in complete social destruction.
Unfortunately she will be re elected with a bigger majority in 2026 I think. The Central electorate has changed so much in 20 odd years in voting preferences. The impact of ''anti-colonial'' and related campaigning in the guise of education in schools and unis may be a factor; there are many not just that. I visit Wellington for several days four times a year and find it interesting to look around . I can only presume it is what the majority want there. It seems to be trying to become a version of Brighton in England, the green and gay hub. Maybe it is a magnet for the illiberals (they are not true left) and gays and that has helped the voter swing.
I have had students , in my private tutoring of remedial maths and reading , who admitted to shoplifting. These students suffered from dyslexia and hyperactivity and had been failed miserably by our current schooling. Don't just blame the home either.
I don't support T. Paul at all but believe particularly youth offenders should have their levels of reading checked out. Having only a harsh condemnation of these youth is brutal as well.
The MIn. of Ed. should be viewed as co-criminals and made accountable as well in their foolish commitment to ideology instead of teaching the basics. It is a complete tragedy we used to have the highest levels of achievement in the basics but now have the worst. These high levels in the past correlated with lower crime rates.
Get out there and offer to help out in schools with aiming to have every child achieve as used to be our ideal and made NZ God's own in the past.
Any idea where she lives. I bet she has some nice stuff that would look good at my place. She might even help me take it out to the car with a bit of physical persuasion.
