DTNZ: Cabinet approves sweeping gun law overhaul

Cabinet has approved major reforms to New Zealand’s gun laws, transferring oversight of the Firearms Safety Authority from the Police Minister to the Firearms Minister in a move aimed at improving safety and simplifying compliance for licensed owners.

The restructured regulator will be led by a civilian chief executive reporting directly to the minister, with the Ministry of Justice providing oversight.

The overhaul includes tougher penalties, new offences such as possessing guns without serial numbers, and measures targeting gang members and 3D-printed weapons.

Endorsements for pest controllers are extended to five years, and collectors gain more flexible storage options.

Restrictions on military-style firearms remain unchanged, while Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee accepted an “agree to disagree” position after failing to secure coalition backing for competitive shooters to access such weapons.

Not sure it's much of an overhaul. It's a bit like putting lipstick on a pig. The law is still draconian and won't stop criminals from accessing firearms. It should be police work to catch these thugs, not laws and tinkering that make life difficult for us law-abiding types. Anyone who has applied to renew a firearms licence will understand.

I surrendered my firearms licence rather than going through the new process. I no longer owned a gun or hunted often so it wasn't worth the drama. I guess that's what they want though.

Oh great! A bit more bureaucracy will certainly make NZ much safer!

If the Police actually did their job properly in relation to firearms ownership the Christchurch massacre wouldn't have happened. That is the reason for these reforms. They are a vast improvement over the replacement regulations enacted by Labour. Licensing under this new system is not at all difficult and more thorough as applicants are profiled. More information better systems better application. Online referees ?? who passed that ??? Jacinda Ardern. Dumb.
