Duncan Garner: 92% vs 31%: The Medical School Numbers That Will Shock New Zealand

Duncan asks why high-achieving applicants are being turned away based on ethnicity, and why the government won't publish the report. Is this addressing past disadvantage, or has it become state-sponsored racial discrimination?

As a now retired Surgeon, I find this selection method repugnant in the extreme.
In my view, not only is it clearly undeniably racist, but equally, other descriptors are appropriate...such as corrupt, odious, misguided, morally indefensible etc...feel free to add others as you see fit.

How Luxon and Peters can sit on their hands over this certainly shows their true moral calibre..imo at least.

I choose to remain anonymous obviously for fear of retribution, but I can assure you ,most of my colleagues feel similarly..this is how low we have sadly sunk as a country.

Luxon has already intentionally stalled the release of the Waitangi Tribunal that his mate Potaka concocted before the election. So is anybody surprised that this same gutless National government won’t publish this blatant apartheid being practiced by the NZ medical schools. David Seymour on the other hand is reportedly screaming blue bloody murder over Luxon’s skullduggery.

You've got exactly the same situation in the US with the Negroes getting preferential treatment but the Asian (especially Chinese) American communities are up in arms about it and presenting legal challenges to the practice.
There's no point me getting bolshy about it because I'm White and accordingly don't count, so this is good to see!

The interesting point is also that in NZ today (excluding the rural in take) the Maori and Pacific doctors registered in the country is about 5-7%. So where do all those accepted doctors go? Do they even graduate? Indeed why take them is they then cannot achieve to the academic and professional standards after being accepted. That is a waste of time and money. Maybe this explains why NZ is so short of Doctors.....

Anonymous said...

After Maori and pacific are in medical school, what percentage of them graduate and practice medicine?

Anonymous said...

They do this is south africa. It is called affirmative action. It is racist to all. One example is the rugby team, the springboks, who are bound under this rule along with businesses and schools. . If you are a black player you will never know if you are there by merit or because of your skin colour. It is wrong

Pretty sure you can't sue an incompetent doctor or surgeon either, though you can file a case with ACC or Disabilities or some group. But my guess is that would be very difficult to get someone struck off the register. The Save Face bureaucrats would say that all surgeries have risks.

The really important question is why Luxon refuses to release the report ?
Why Mr Luxon , why ??

Why ars you so worried, when because of the corruption of the MSM that it's unlikely to make the front page ?

No, of course it is not acceptable Duncan.
You ask: Why are we still waiting for the report?
Is it because they want to postpone it until after the election? Do they think they can do He Puapua again?
Surely, they can only get away with that once.
This is just mindless stupidity which is wrecking New Zealand. We are not just presenting ourselves as deficient, but additionally as deranged fools.
How is it possible that an erstwhile clever nation, justifiably described as 'punching above its weight', could collapse so severely?
Future generations will not be kind.

One of the fundamentals of western society is the pursuit of excellence .

Academic learning institutions invariably find the grades of a student on completion of a course mirror the grades the student achieved prior to entry.

If we are admitting those with much lower grades to Med School and other courses they will undoubtedly graduate with much lower grades and abilities.

And the Med Schools are not the only university courses with preferential entry to non whites. Various Law schools do so and Auckland University has quite a range of admittance schemes for non whites to various courses.

The admittance mark for Auckland Med School has recently been 91.6 % for whites and 65 % for non whites. Those scores get a non white guaranteed acceptance. Whereas the white student is on a waiting list from which they may be selected after interview and having displayed a broad range of aptitudes . Which the non whites candidates amazingly all ,without exception possess in abundance.

It's called dumbing down society. It's a skill New Zealand possesses in abundance.

Non white. Sounds nasty doesn't it

Non white . It has a nasty tone to it desnt it

In 1896 a US Supreme Court justice (John Marshal Harland ) said that their constitution was colour blind.
Entry requirements for any NZ medical school should be the same, with a focus on academic results and overall competence.

All too simple for the nutters who think they have a God-given right to reshape NZ society.

I am aware of Maori medical students at Auckland Med school , at the end of last year, being sent 3 of the more difficult questions on their phones for the exam the next. Where is the level playing field?

I had a day surgery two years ago in NZ and the surgeons and anesthetist were great.
But I think I'll be thinking about being a medical tourist in future...probably Thailand.
Their health system is superior and cheaper. Surgeons and doctors trained internationally and no voodoo witchcraft and Taniwha bullshit on the curriculum.

Are our Uni administrators looking embarrassed ?
No, just stupidly proud of their Third Reich antics.
They have created the equivalent of white Aryan races by promoting Maori like this.

Maori have renamed every part of the human body into some false manifestation of te reo.
Which will make these privileged Maori doctors unable to practice anywhere else in the world.
How ridiculous is that ?
Are these universities taking any responsibility for their ludicrous education ?

Since the early 1970s, NZ has had a PolyPref scheme (as it used to be known) for entry to Otago Uni medical school. Yet numbers of Maori doctors remain persistently low.

I have heard anecdotally that the scheme is being rorted by applicants who have a smidgin only of Maori (or Pacific) ancestry, and are using that to enable entry, to make up for poor grades.

What's happening now is outright discrimination based on ethnicity. As a society, we'd be much better off, were academic merit to be the prime selection criterion, as was once the case.

Anon@7.35: "what percentage of them graduate and practice medicine?"

By the looks of it, many don't graduate. As I noted above, numbers of Maori doctors remain persistently low. Here's AI's take on it:
"The number of Māori doctors increased to 1,125 in 2026, up from 1,053 (5.5%) in 2025."
Sounds about right to me.

BV@7.11: "....I'm White and accordingly don't count..."

I'm also white. Since skin colour is an extrinsic characteristic only, and none of us gets to choose skin colour or ethnicity, we're as entitled as anybody else to have an opinion, and to voice it. Without, I'd add, being screamed at and having ad homs flung at us.

Anonymous AT 7:49 I don't follow sport, but I read in the paper this morning that South Africa beat New Zealand at the footie.
Even so, New Zealand has traditionally had a strong rugby team and I feel pretty sure that had something to do with a disproportionate number of Maori players.
Could this possibly be a symptom of New Zealand falling apart? Are we already worse than historic SA apartheid?

Does a Maori doctor have first allegiance to the Hippocratic Oath or the Treaty ?

If (when) civil "unrest" were to break out in NZ, are these Maori doctors going to treat injured whites ?

Anonymous said...

I am so tired of being regarded by our civil servants as a second class citizen because I don't have superior DNA.

Auckland University, look me in the eye and tell me that you will not admit me to Med School because I'm white.

Look me in the eye and tell me that I have to sit complete a paper in bollocks matauranga before I can be awarded my Science Degree.

You can be assured that I will take a case to the United Nations and make a helluva fuss about the apartheid policies in NZ.

The real issue for me is that the a real issue actually occurs long before these students reach tertiary level.
I will mention here "The Mississippi Miracle " because it causes Progressive educators to be overcome with intense fury. This US state with the highest proportion of poor black students , jumped from bottom in literacy to among the top 20.US states in reading scores. This is after the introduction of traditional systematic phonics and dumping of the infernal Whole Language reading method.
The point here is that Maori are not underachieving in any area , including becoming doctors, because of their ethnicity but because we have the worst education system imaginable which has been shown over and over to selectively discriminate against people of colour and other low SES students. This is what selectively prevents them achieving academically - not their race .
Progressive educationalists, scream out about equity as if they invented this concept but their . ideology never has nor ever will produce equity. Nor Equality of opportunity. It just produces racial division, from ideas of Marxist victim hood as we see illustrated in this video.
However Traditional Education , as we used to have, does produce equity. Listen to Katherine Burbalsinghe ( on U-tube) who has coloured, immigrant, poor children achieving at the same level as Eton College.
Many people write about this racial favouring of Maori, but never look into why we , in NZ have the longest tail of underachievement in the developed world which include a disproportionate number of Maori. Please start doing this someone .
I am tired of the constant gripes about the favouring of Maori in all areas. Necessary to expose, but unproductive. Gaynor

Luxon and national party lack of any comments or action on all race policy is disgraceful. Clearly the population has had enough, more than enough, this needs to be stopped immediately.

Barrie Davis said...

Gaynor,
You are writing about literacy, but that is an entry level skill. What is being discussed here is science based and I assume that a level of science is necessary to study medicine.
Polynesians seem to have difficulty with subjects which require rational understanding and our human rational faculty is recently developed and presumably still developing.
It is likely that the various races have different variations of reasoning ability which account for the different aptitudes with respect of science and medicine.
These variations are almost certainly cultural and possibly also with a subsequent genetic uptake. A key indicator is the speed at which Asians assimilated European science compared to Polynesians.
What we should not do is blame the system or colonization and instead face what we understand of the facts.
But I don't think literacy is the problem regarding Med School. That is certain Maori and pakeha operatives rorting the system.
What is disappointing is that our representative Parliament has been so gullible or wrong or corrupt as to accept it.

My attack is on Progressive education Barrie , of which literacy is central to schooling . Destroy that and you have destroyed a child's whole educational life. In the past, many decades ago when when we had Traditional Education of which systematic phonics was one major aspect Maori achieved considerably better in all subjects. To reinforce my argument on the superiority of Traditional Methods, overall , I also mention K. Burbalsinghe 's school which is a secondary school and children of all ethnicities who excel in all subjects including science . Cognitive science states all children basically learn the same way , and different learning styles is a fallacy .
Thank you for, for bringing this up Barrie , It is important . I have taught hundreds of children maths and science at all levels and had then all excel using the same traditional methods. My brother was , one year, the top intermediate achieving student at Otago University , competing against all the science and medical students and he had a very intensive traditional learning programme at secondary school . All those in his senior year at a state secondary school, who aimed for acceptance into Medical school , were accepted because of their high marks . If Maori students also had this sort of education they too could have achieved higher. Asians usually also have a traditional educational programme. This includes , cognitively approved , hard work , with extensive revision and consolidation of knowledge. I have taught Asian students as well as Maori .
Traditional education applauds meritocracy at all levels. Alternatively Progressive education promotes constructivism which fails far too many at primary school.
What we need to focus on is why so many Maori are at the bottom and how to get rid of the achievement gap. Blaming colonisation is the progressive's way of diverting blame from their ideology . Gaynor
