A new fixed bus lane camera on Riddiford Street, near Wellington Regional Hospital, issued 1,475 tickets totaling $221,250 in fines between December 9 and January 17, significantly outpacing nearby Adelaide Road’s $26,250 in fines.
Some drivers have claimed confusion over signage led to unintentional use of the lane.
While the Wellington City Council maintains that signage complies with regulations, critics speaking to state media, including Councillor Nureddin Abdurahman and AA spokesperson Dylan Thomsen, have called for a review to address the high infringement rates.
The council argues that enforcement encourages compliance, as shown by a decline in violations since the camera’s installation.

Yeah well good luck getting people to pay up
These revenue traps are very unfair on visitors. Very occupied finding their way about, forever searching for arrows on the road, and fathoming the quircks of the flow, drivers cannot reasonably hunt for and read every possibly relevant roadside sign and notice. Regular strays into the lanes have a moderating effect on the otherwise wild driving of busses. Whoever's pedantic legal fault any collision may be, always an inconvenience for bus drivers. Without the occasional stray they would barrel down the unexpected left side of cars with even greater abandon. lLttle wonder the public is so contemptuous of Council when they are party to contrived rackets like this.
