It is impossible to overstate the profound impact that Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency is having on America. His efforts are nothing short of a radical cleansing, and it is reassuring to witness Musk fielding press conference questions with President Trump seated beside him at the Resolute Desk.
Musk, ever the slightly autistic eccentric, had his young son “Little X” perched on his shoulders during the conference—an optic that could easily be dismissed as whimsical, but which underscores Musk’s and Trump’s disregard for convention.
I cannot help but think of another infamous historical figure—Caligula. As some may remember, the ancient Roman emperor was often paraded before the troops as a young boy, wearing custommade small military boots as a mascot for the Roman Empire. His father, the popular General Germanicus, who commanded a third of Rome’s entire military, died in mysterious circumstances on campaign in Syria, well before he could assume the title of Caesar. Caligula, a nickname meaning "Little Boots,” has become synonymous with his eventual sick depravity.
I bring up this comparison not to suggest any correlation, but rather to mock the ubiquitous and rather absurd claims by internet trolls who have begun to label Elon Musk the literal anti-Christ, or the Beast, or whatever.
Musk’s undertaking—his effort to bring clarity to the tangled web of governmental finance and corruption, a la George Soros, may in fact be as noble a pursuit as any "divine" mission on Earth. Let there be Light, and all that.
DOGE has already exposed a staggering $100 billion annually being funnelled into recipient accounts without any of the requisite identification boxes being filled in —no social security numbers, no verification numbers, none of the basic safeguards that grants are supposed to include. When Musk inquired about the level of fraud within the data, he was informed by Treasury officials that half of these transactions could be classified as "obvious fraud." That’s $50 billion in American taxpayer dollars. That figure likely represents the tip of the iceberg in overall corruption festering within the government departments. With the forthcoming audit of Pentagon funds, I wager that the true scale of the Swamp’s dealings will soon come into full view.
To those who are up in arms over the absence of "proper procedure" or the lack of Congressional oversight regarding the cancellation of contracts within this deeply entrenched, off-the-rails bureau —please just take a step back and maybe sniff some smelling salts. The information that is now coming to light is utterly invaluable. It exposes the vast networks of fraud, who is connected to whom, the organised cultural assault with the funding of transgenderism, Critical Race Theory, perverted medical science and beyond; decades of venality and secretive governance that has hitherto been blocked to any kind of scrutiny.
I do not deny the importance of safeguarding the personal data of ordinary Americans. Indeed, such data should be fully protected under privacy laws. However, it is important to note that Musk does not have direct access to this data. His team operates on a "read-only" basis, meaning that they cannot alter any of the information, they can only analyse it —a point confirmed by Treasury Secretary Bessent. But even so, what we are witnessing here is the largest and most far-reaching data analysis in the history of the nation, and it’s already telling terrible tales that aren’t tales. They’re real.
The American people have a right to know how their money is being spent and who is spending it. It is long past time for full disclosure. Let it all come out.
[Edit from author: The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced Monday that some $4.7 trillion in payments from the Treasury Department were missing a critical tracking code, which made tracing the transactions “almost impossible.”]

As we here in NZ should have the right to know how much Taxpayer’s money is being paid out to so called Māori and their dubious claims via Treaty Settlements.
Wow. Go Elon. Time to drain the swamp here.
Criminal lawyers are in high demand in Washington DC since Musk started opening the financial books. Just look at the financial worth of some these politicians like Schumer and Pelosi, you don’t amass hundreds of millions of dollars on a politicians wage.
Unless they seriously attack entitlements (massive social security, Medicaid, and military spending) that are the main reason why the US has trillion dollar deficits, none of this will make much of a dent.
The main political benefit of DOGE is that it keeps the idiots who cant do maths distracted from not tackling mass immigration and not ending costly overseas military adventures.
The seems to be a suggestion here that the wealth these Democrat politicians have amassed has been ill-gotten. Perhaps an explanation is in order.
To anon 6.24 am. I think the concern is that there is a hidden cost now on the likes of many construction projects. For example, for Dunedin Hospital there was some kind of consultation with Ngai Tahu. Why was it necessary and at what cost?
Wow. Ms Pierson has certainly drunk deep of the Kool Aid. I thought this platform promised "expert commentary on topical political and policy issues". There's nothing "expert" about that little rant, unless you consider slavish regurgitation of MAGA propaganda somehow demonstrates expertise.
Perhaps Ms Pierson should reflect on why some of the first Federal employees to be fired by Trump were the Inspectors General; the independent officials charged with rooting out government waste, fraud, abuse, and preventing misconduct. Their removal sent a clear signal that Trump did not want the real watch-dogs to know what misconduct he was about to perpetrate. He would only trust first-buddy Musk to do that job and find what Trump wanted him to find.
Just imagine the outcry if our Prime Minister announced he was sacking the Auditor-General for investigating illegal political donations and replacing him with the biggest donor to party coffers.
So don't kid me that you know anything about what's going on Ms Pierson. You clearly want us to believe that Trump's behaviour is perfectly normal. After all, when Trump fired the Inspectors General, he said "It's a very common thing to do". Well, actually It''s not, Ms Pierson, and most of the non-MAGA world knows it!
Incidentally, Caligula only reigned for four years before being assassinated a result of a conspiracy by officers of the Praetorian Guard, senators, and courtiers. Four years is a significant period in Presidential politics and might just get a numerologist all excited.
Well written Olivia. Your piece was always going to attract those with a serious case of TDS.
Jones Boy - before engaging in a typical left-wing ad hominem attack on Olivia Pierson, did you stop to consider that the Inspectors General were fired BECAUSE they OVERSAW such rank fraud and corruption??
No need for an explanation Ewan. She’s just reporting a fact.
What fact, Clive? My comment was clearly in response to that of Rob Beechey, but was placed out of sequence. He seemed to suggest that Democrats had amassed wealth irregularly. That’s an aspersion to which I take offence. Ms Pierson made no refence to the personal wealth of Democrats in her posting, which I generally disagree with anyway.
I find the most informative person to read on this topic is Prof Robert Reich. He may have worked for the Clinton admin - but he knows his stuff. He's written at length about the different stages of Trump and Musk's actions. Not sure in what sense Ms Pierson is an expert on the US. Reich certainly is. Surely BV can draw on a genuine expert of some kind on this topic - even if it's not Reich.
Hugh Jordan does not know why the Inspector Generals were fired. No one knows, because Trump did not give a reason. And that makes his actions illegal under the statute that created the position and why I am as entitled as Jordan to draw a conclusion as to Trump's real motives. But in support of my position I offer the documented daily evidence that Trump is a compulsively vindictive liar, whereas he has provided absolutely no verifiable evidence of the fraud and corruption he wants us all to believe exists. I look forward to the Court's opinion in due course, that is, assuming he hasn't fired the judges by then. As for ad hominen attacks, if I am critical of Pierson it's not because of her personal attributes but her stupid ideas. And aren't ideas what debates are all about? You want to read a real ad hominem attack? There's plenty to choose from on Truth Social, notably penned by that great practitioner, Donald Trump. Enjoy!
.
So far we can just see the tip of the iceberg of fraud, waste and general corruption Olivia. Day by day the picture becomes clearer.
Whether It was Rob or Olivia who offended you with the suggestion is irrelevant - we now have proof, if ever it was needed, that many democrats have made fortunes clipping the ticket on wasteful spending.
So too many Republicans. Hopefully they will all get their cards when individually exposed due to Elon Musk’s investigations. Those dodgy practices can no longer be denied so that makes it a fact.
