Britain’s reliance on fossil fuels has increased for the first time in four years, dealing a major blow to Ed Miliband’s hopes of decarbonising the grid by 2030. Gas-fired power plants generated 26.8pc of power in 2025, a rise of 1.1pc from the year prior, according to new figures. Claire Coutinho, the shadow energy secretary, has accused Mr Miliband of needlessly driving up bills and putting the country’s energy security at risk through his ideological approach to energy policy.
EV discounts are unsustainable, says industry body
Industry discounts for electric vehicles are "unsustainable", a major motoring group has warned. The CEO of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders called on the government to bring forward a planned review of the ZEV Mandate, saying "It is increasing the number of battery electric vehicles being sold, the question is, at what cost?" Such a review, he suggested, should look at factors including a marked increase in energy prices and higher costs for raw materials, which have made life more difficult for car manufacturers.
One of Britain’s last oil refineries to be mothballed despite rescue deal
An American oil and gas giant is preparing to mothball one of Britain’s last remaining oil refineries after buying the business out of administration. The CEO of Fuels Industry UK, warned the UK’s refining industry was “now past a tipping point” and that the industry was getting unfairly hit by carbon taxes that foreign firms do not have to pay.

The owners are among more than 300 homeowners nationwide who have had their properties damaged after being approved for a Government scheme known as ECO4 where they were were given solar panels, two heat pumps, new radiators and plumbing and roof insulation and wall insulation.

US Energy Secretary slams UK energy policies
Speaking at a conference organised by Goldman Sachs, Chris Wright, the US Energy Secretary, told his audience that the UK’s energy policies were accelerating denindustrialisation. Despite record investment, he said the UK and Germany produce electricity today than we did 20 years ago.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Matt Ridley says: “It is striking that, a quarter of the way into a new century, geopolitics continues to be determined by hydrocarbons, as if the green energy transition never started… Like it or not, hydrocarbon energy is the very lifeblood of prosperity.”
