NZCPR Weekly: Losers Take Power

Dear NZCPR Reader,

In this week’s newsletter we reflect on the news that New Zealand’s new Government is made up of a coalition of the losing parties in the election, our NZCPR Guest Commentator Frank Newman examines the impact on the property and business sectors, and in this week’s poll we ask whether it should be the party with the most votes that is given the opportunity to form a new government, rather than the party that holds the balance of power.

"a coalition of the losing parties in the election"
Hey, let's cut this out: more than 50% of the country voted for parties with leftist (interventionist) views on economics and strong (i.e. generous & expensive) social programmes.
Is this bad? Only in that it's "not good".
But at worst, they last 3 years and another generation is introduced to the disaster than is interventionism. (And another generation is saddled with huge student loans they can't repay.)
Come on: we don't want to be sore losers like the Clintonistas and the Remainians.
Either you're for democracy... or you're not. That's the thing about the freedom of which we all love: the freedom to make mistakes, even when choosing our governments.
This is still better than FPP and electoral colleges.
(PS all those praising the German system: it delivered a government that opened the floodgates on illegal immigration. That to me is not proof that their system is better than ours. Just that voters have to remember not to trust their politicians. Just like Peters reneged on the Maori electorate poll, and French, Dutch and Irish politicians ignored their voters on the EU constitution.)
