News:
Go-ahead to transfer functions to iwi authority a New Zealand first - council

Waikato Regional Council has reached a landmark decision to approve the transfer of specified water quality monitoring functions to the Tawharetoa Maori Trust Board - a first of its kind in Aotearoa New Zealand.

In a meeting held today, councillors voted unanimously in favour of transferring summer bathing beach, regional rivers, rainfall and groundwater quality monitoring within the Lake Taupo catchment to the trust board.

Kerry McDonald: The Aluminium Smelter Saga - There Has Never Been an Electricity Subsidy

Independent studies show that the Tiwai Point Aluminium smelter is one of New Zealand’s most successful developments. The first (1971) study estimated a 10% real annual return to NZ in terms of net national economic benefit over the smelter’s life; and subsequent studies  estimated  increasingly higher returns. The studies all included the full economic cost of the electricity used.

On the other hand Comalco and its two Japanese partners were the victims of unprincipled government actions, entirely outside the letter and intent of their agreements, to impose extraordinary increases in the smelter’s electricity prices.

Michael Shellenberger: Climate-change hysteria costs lives — but activists want to keep panic alive

Last month, I published a book, “Apocalypse Never,” which debunks popular environmental myths. Among them: that humans are causing a sixth mass extinction and that climate change is making natural disasters worse.

While I expected my book to be controversial, I didn’t expect CNN’s top climate reporter to compare it to an advertisement for cigarettes. Or to have an environmental journalist with nearly half a million followers on Twitter accuse me of promoting “white supremacy.”

David Farrar: Latest poll

Newshub have released a Reid Research poll which shows Labour 36% ahead of National.
Now Reid Research is a very good polling company, but even the best polling company will get results outside the normal margin of error. When you say there is 95% confidence that the poll results are within 3% of the actual, that means there is a 5% chance they are not (putting aside non sampling errors).
I do not believe this poll is even close to reflecting the actual situation. There is no way there is a 36% gap between the parties. The numerous polls I have seen and done have it way way closer.

Some Māori frustrated they can't switch electoral rolls until 2024
Māori trying to switch electoral rolls ahead of the election are frustrated they will not be able to do so until 2024, and are left with poor candidate choices in their current electorate as a result.

He said Māori should not be able to change rolls just because they do not like the candidates in their electorate, as there will also be non-Māori in this position who do not have the option to change.

Heather du Plessis-Allan: It is not a bank's job to decide who are the goodies and baddies

Shane Jones reckons that Kiwibank's board has gone bonkers and I have to agree with him.

If you haven't caught up on this, Kiwibank seems to have taken it upon itself to be New Zealand's moral police. It has released its Responsible Business Banking policy, which bans a whole bunch of industries from doing business with it.

Casinos, fossil fuel producers, the non-medicinal and recreational drugs industry, the military grade firearms industry, predatory lenders, tobacco manufacturers and, a bit of a surprise, brothels and strip clubs.

Louis Houlbrooke: Maori Business Privilege

Tender quota for Māori business

Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta wants a quota of 16% of government spending on roading and construction tenders to be made exclusively available for Māori businesses.

If a Minister was found to be handing out government contracts on the basis of iwi connections, it would be considered corrupt. But Nanaia Mahuta seems to think she can avoid this accusation by enshrining the practice in government policy.

Clive Bibby: Opportunities abound but we need to take advantage of them

The current argument about the need to reduce our core debt to below 30% of GDP before we lose the ability to manage the process within politically
acceptable guidelines is a good indication on who should be in charge of our  recovery.

It is clear that Labour and their mates have no idea about how it might be  achieved and worse still, actually don't want to know about the monster they have created.

I am amazed at the continued announcements of cash available for just about anything you like to name - much of it of doubtful necessity but supported by the usual special interest groups who recognise a gift horse when they see one.

NZCPR Weekly: Alarmism

Dear NZCPR Reader,

This week, we look into the danger of alarmism in public policy with reference to New Zealand’s harsh lockdown and the most stringent carbon restrictions in the world, our NZCPR Guest Commentator Michael Shellenberger apologises for the climate alarmism that he and his fellow environmentalists have created, and our poll asks whether you believe that the Government should put New Zealand’s climate response on hold so it doesn’t undermine our economic recovery.

Karl Du Fresne: Collins must be well pleased

Two leading figures on the left have given Judith Collins the most ringing endorsement imaginable.

Matt McCarten and Nicky Hager have paid the new National Party leader a generous compliment by unleashing hyperbolic attacks on her. They wouldn’t have bothered to do this unless they were worried about the threat she poses to Labour and the Greens.

Viv Forbes: Aussies Fight Three Wars - Climate, Covid and China

Australian politicians are trying to maintain their never-ending Climate War on carbon fuels while waging a Lockdown War on the elusive Covid virus and also provoking a Trade War with China, our biggest trading partner.

We cannot afford three hopeless and costly wars at once. One would be too many.

The political war on carbon fuels has damaged the environment with forests of "green" power poles, flats of ground-sterilising solar panels, hills of bird-slicing wind turbines plus spider-webs of new power lines and roads.

Kate Hawkesby: Judith Collins is all business and takes nothing personally

Been away for a couple of weeks, did anything happen?
What a fortnight of news - and here’s what I’ve found refreshing about this time.
Firstly, Todd Muller was brave enough to make his mental health a priority, and to step away from a big high profile job at a critical time, in order to honour that. That’s a sea change for this country from where we were even five years ago, so steps have been taken around the stigma of mental health, and that’s a good thing.

Gerry Bowler: Canada is Systemically Racist – but not in the way you think

Words are important tools in human interaction and, used in certain ways, they become weapons. Politics these days is the art of twisting language to do harm to your enemies.

Let us examine how certain words and phrases have lost their original meanings and have become useful clubs with which to thrash healthy heterosexual males, white people, and folks of all colours who are insufficiently enthusiastic about the revolution.

Take “race” for a start. This word originated in the idea that physical characteristics such as skin colour and skull shape could be used to subcategorize the human species; it’s an idea as least as old as civilization.

Chris Talgo: Climate Alarmism Versus the Scientific Method

In early June, the World Economic Forum unveiled the Great Reset. The Great Reset is a farce having very little to do with saving or conserving the environment and everything to do with crony capitalism and forcibly imposing unreliable and unaffordable green energy schemes on the world. In short, the Great Reset is the Green New Deal on a worldwide scale.

Like the Green New Deal’s advocates did at its rollout, those pushing the Great Reset are using fearmongering and unwarranted doom-and-gloom predictions to make people believe it is the only way to avert a global apocalypse.

Dr Oliver Hartwich: The salt in the soup of democracy

Perhaps the election of Judith Collins to the National leadership does not change her party’s immediate electoral prospects. National is still fighting an uphill battle to unseat an extremely popular Prime Minister.

But Collins’ election makes a huge difference to the political climate. It feels as if robust democracy is awakening from a 53-day slumber.

From every interaction and by all accounts, previous leader Todd Muller is a nice guy. That was a big part of his problem.

Karl du Fresne: The dark side of politics

It would be a gross overstatement to say we’ve seen politics at its worst over the past few weeks. Politics at its worst involves assassinations, coups, repression, persecution, nepotism, violence and corruption, all of which we’ve been spared. But we’ve certainly seen politics at its most unlovely, at least in a liberal democracy: freighted with hubris, schadenfreude, vanity, infighting, folly and self-pity.

If the drama surrounding the two changes of leadership in the National Party achieved nothing else, it at least served as a reminder of how unpleasant politics can seem to those outside it – and how damaging it can be to those addicted by its allure. We all know that politics is ultimately about the acquisition and exercise of power, but rarely do we see it displayed so nakedly.

Lindsay Perigo: Go Crush 'Em Crusher!

The best thing Judith Collins said during her first press conference as National Party leader came right at the end: "I think it might be time for a drink."

Here we had intimations at least that the prim, prissy, prudish neo-Puritanism, the Woke-Fascism unleashed on the nation by the Marxist Jacinda Ardern might have met its match.

Equally encouraging, Collins did not disavow her long-standing nick-name, "Crusher."

"I am hoping that the National Party will collectively crush the other lot come September 19," was all she had to say about that.

Barry Soper: National should have picked Collins two years ago

National MPs did what they should have done on February 27, 2018. They elected Judith Collins as their leader. Had they done so back then they most likely wouldn't have been in the bind they find themselves in just two months out from the election.

Collins was politically the best of the bunch who put their hands up after Bill English called it quits. Instead, they settled on Simon Bridges who, among many other things, never lived down his unusual, grating accent. The public never connected with him even though before the Covid calamity almost half of them connected with the National Party.

Sir Bob Jones: Journalists Be Kind

In their typical pack-running imitative practise, our media have had a field-day slamming the Health Minister David Clark for allegedly, “throwing the Director of Health, Ashley Bloomfield, under the bus”.

This is rubbish. The failure of the checking system fell squarely on Bloomfield’s management responsibility.

To the extent the Minister was also to blame relies solely on an absurdity which I’ve written about for decades, of alleged Ministerial Responsibility.

This is an irrational practise we’ve inherited from Britain and it’s long past time it was scrapped.

Anthony Watts: Climate Activists Step Up Calls for Imprisoning Climate Realists

Unable to win the debate in the court of public opinion, climate activists are increasingly calling for the imprisonment of climate realists. The latest example is an article in Carbon Brief titled “How climate change misinformation spreads online.” The authors, who are all University of Exeter professors, advocate fines and imprisonment for people publishing “climate misinformation” online. They justify their call for imprisonment by claiming tremendous harm from “misleading information that is created and spread with intent to deceive.”

That’s one take, another take is that those who publish what the Left deems as “misinformation” are actually publishing what might be dubbed “inconvenient truths.” The 2006 film by Al Gore of the same name is a case in point. Gore, not being particularly good at details, published a boatload of misinformation in that film, and social media responded to correct the record.

Melanie Phillips: The War Against the West, and Its Defender

Across America, law and order has now broken down. There are repeated attacks on the police and a huge spike in the number of murders.

On FrontPageMag, John Perrazzo reports:

“On Sunday, May 31, eighteen homicides were committed in Chicago, breaking the city’s previous one-day record of thirteen, set 29 years ago. In fact, over the course of that same weekend as a whole, Chicago police responded to at least 73 incidents in which 92 people were shot, including 27 who died as a result. ‘We’ve never seen anything like it at all,”’ said Max Kapustin, the senior research director at the University of Chicago Crime Lab. ‘I don’t even know how to put it into context. It’s beyond anything that we’ve ever seen before.’

Clive Bibby: "Father forgive them - for they know not what they do!"

I am probably the last person on this earth who should be using scripture as a back up when trying to make a political point but hopefully most readers will agree that, in this case, it might be justified and after all - in this context, it is meant as a humane gesture.
The Editor of our newspaper has chosen to throw petrol on the smouldering embers of the climate change debate by publishing opinions of an investment consultant, Dr Paul Winton who has been brought to this region at the invitation of Trust Tairawhiti in a supposed attempt to help justify both the Trust's and the Government's position on our greenhouse gas emissions targets. Dr Winton is quoted as saying that we would be better off without any dairy cows. We should let them all die! Go figure!

Dr Oliver Hartwich: A Green Path to the Fringe

The Green Party has declared its wealth tax will be a red line in any coalition negotiations.

And because Labour knows this, the larger party left the door wide open. Rather than ruling out the Greens’ plans, both the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance did not rule them out.

In separate interviews, both Jacinda Ardern and Grant Robertson said these plans were not Labour’s. No wonder, because Labour does not want another election campaign under the cloud of tax policy. Labour perhaps has sympathy for the plan but presently finds it convenient to blame its eventual introduction on a future coalition partner.

Henry Armstrong: Diversity Is No Substitute for Merit

The new National Party leadership of Todd Muller and Nikki Kaye has been roundly criticised, nay condemned, even attacked, for apparently not having sufficient “diversity” on their revised front bench.

This follows the replacement of Simon Bridges and Paula Bennett, both, in my view, very able and sincere politicians (yes, some actually are). Both can and do claim significant Maori descent, but at one point were criticised by our pathetic media and other no-hopers, for “not being Maori-enough”!

Apart from not being sufficiently ethnic, these very able people have been the victims of cruel social media attacks (perhaps initiated by their political opponents) and biased, leftist, journalists who continually slag the Opposition.

And now the irony of all ironies, we have the media complaining that Paula Bennett’s retirement from Parliament symbolizes a deliberate negation of diversity!

Hold on, you cannot have it both ways.

Clive Bibby: The Free World holds is breath

There is no question that the free world is in crisis.

Those of us who value our freedoms are contemplating an uncertain future where the choices we currently take for granted as individuals are at risk and unfortunately, there isn't a lot we can do about it.

Sadly, our Government, like many others of our traditional allies doesn't seem to care.

To some extent, our current parlous state is the result of a growing tendency to believe every dollop of bullshit forced upon us by a media fixated with its role in ensuring the demise of the current US President.
