Doesn't the shooting in Auckland overnight illustrate to you that the Police Ministers’ idea of getting volunteers to do patrols in Auckland CBD so police don’t have to is not only cooked, but also dangerous.
The latest from police is that these guys didn’t know each other and got into a verbal altercation on Fort Street.
Next minute, got into a physical altercation, and next minute one chap pulls out a gun and shoots one bloke in the abdomen, another in the head, and then takes off on a Lime scooter.
For a start, do they really think that people that are prepared to shoot at each otherare gonna be put off by a couple of volunteers patrolling the street?
But even to the point... do we really want to those volunteers walking into a situation like that?
Imagine just for a second, that a couple of Maori wardens came across those men rumbling last night.
What if they tried to break up the fight where one of those guys had a concealed gun?
I don’t want to send Maori grandmas and granddads into that, that's nuts.
It’s crazy that the Police Minister even thought this was feasible.
Police are doing a valiant job of trying to tell Aucklanders that there’s nothing to worry about today.
But you’d have to be living under a rock not to notice the increase in violent crime in that part of the city lately; this is the second shooting in two weeks.
It comes after a mass brawl of multiple people laying into one guy on the waterfront in May, and it comes after kids with hammers held up a jewellery store on Queen Street.
Police Minister Ginny needs to get with the page.
We need more cops.
Remember those 1800 extra police were recruited to fill a gap that existed in 2017 already.
That was before Labour emptied the prisons.
That was before hundreds more 501s arrived here.
It was before the Comancheros even set up a chapter in NZ.
Six years on and a heck of a lot more crime, we need more police patrolling Auckland’s CBD, and everywhere else.
We do not need grannies and grandads trying to break up fights, and I’d bet you that even Ginny realised that after last night.

Joining the Police Force is a voluntary act. Same goes for Corrections Officers. Most things in life are voluntary, except for going to jail. That was mandatory, until Kelvin Davis decided that it wasn’t.
So Labour's solution to curb the rampant increase in crime is for volunteer citizens to patrol the streets at night....instead of the police!!!!
Maybe Ginny figures that if an ordinary guy/girl gets killed or hospitalised then it doesn't affect her police numbers.
Trouble is, as far as I can see, most of our police seem to live in their patrol cars or back at the police station, probably filling out all the paperwork required to arrest someone these days, or more likely attending a multitude of Maori-friendly cultural awareness programmes.
Ginny's a ninny, but we knew that! She's a member of this Labour government - say no more!
I work on Queen Street in auckland. A typical day involves seeing people half clothed, yelling and screaming down the street, homeless people covering half the footpath and the smell of urine all around, going into countdown and seeing glass being swept up and a poker faced employee shrugging their shoulders at the lastest robbery, and a fight breaking out on a corner. This happens while the ordinary office workers like me walk to work and try to ignore it. It has been escalating for some time
now. Not many people are surprised at this new trend of shooting which has just started, and will no doubt become a weekly or monthly occurrence if there remains no consequences or police anywhere to be seen. And in a first world country, the fact that you can shoot someone dead and use a scooter as a getaway vehicle has reached an entirely new level of crazy.
Ridiculous
Why stop at the police? Volunteers could also man hospitals and schools - regardless of qualifications.
Just as expected from this inept Cabinet.
In fact, citizen volunteers would probably do a much better job of running the entire country! Keep this dangerous government in its parliamentary play pen.
Police are not enough. I read a book about this ex mi5 agent, whose job was to follow and stop terrorist activity in london. Whole groups of them work undercover. We need something like this in nz to stop the gang culture and guns taking over..
Surely all these shooting are just misinformation. Jacinda proudly told the UN that after the Christchurch shooting, she had singlehandedly solved all our gun problems. That the world should follow her amazingness to peace and unity.
when ginny says the wants 'maori volunteers', not just volunteers, it indicates that:
a. the perps are maori & need one of their kind to sort it out. can the govt confirm this despite media squirming around reporting the details of people involved?
b. she is happy to sacrifice the live of maori people while managing crime? why not send the whites to take the risk?
c. she thinks that maori should work for free. has she asked if any of the chinese would like to work for free?
i would like the govt to find a way out of this racist twister :)
in most of the 3rd world, this is the time when govt brings in the army & gives them shoot at sight orders to assure the public that things are back to normal. since we have already descended from 1st to 3rd world over these years, perhaps it is time to emulate that.
Every time a gang "Rides Out" in a large number, taking over the roads as they go, it in effect becomes a recruitment drive. "Look at us, nobody can touch us". Gang patches should be banned in all public spaces and gang activity needs to be subjected to oppressive harassment, anything to make membership an unappealing option.
All this robbery, violence and gang activity should surely wake us up to the fact progressive ideas in education and through out society have failed abysmally. It is progressivism that has turned us into a third world country.
Traditional values have been thrown out the window and left us devoid of morality, discipline, a properly educated younger population and it seems even common sense.
There are no solutions to this and other social problems from within the liberal paradigm, because these problems are a result of the liberal paradigm. Martial law and shooting criminals in the act to kill in the known high crime areas would stop it overnight, but because they are nearly all brown, that would be "racist" so it can't be done. What we have is a situation where the most lax approach is towards those who deserve to be treated the harshest.
To those who will read, and/or have read and will come back to see what other comments have been posted - I add "my twuppence half penny comment"-
1] - we have for years 'past had press releases' either from the Police, or The Office of The Minister of Police - regarding the "number of Police that we will/may/ might/ try/will attempt" to train and place in respective Police stations across NZ; A Joke. I recall being told, many years ago, that at the conclusion of one Police Training Wing, that many were sent to Auckland, to cover the loss of staff - which was the result of multiple reasons, one being the PERF that Police staff could 'employ' to leave;
2] - we have had Commissioners, who have in some small way 'failed to get to grips'- with an entire Force, function as well as work with a Minister (be they competent or not) - which could possibly include Senior Police staff, across NZ;
3]- we had a Ministry of Transport/ some may remember the 'black & white traffic cop cars - which produced the "oh shit" sensation' when seen on the roads - the Police took over that function, there was a reason, which became a disputed point at a later date, and I would contend the "being seen on the road" i.e. Highway Patrol, has declined over past years;
4] - we have a current Commissioner, who If I recall, that of recent days has "stated that the Police would put Uniform Staff on foot patrol" which I am wondering when that will happen.
5] - the Legal Firearm Owner, in NZ, was put at in a situation, from our Mosque shooting, which I will even now state _ "that the knee jerk reaction from Govt [and Police] was for other [political] reasons, than to "reduce the potential of any one else going on a rampage, with an automatic weapon".
The reason I say that, we have had single individuals, with firearms, shoot multiple people - Aramoana Beach/Dunedin - National Park - which did not result in the Legal Firearm Owner having to "surrender weapons in a buy back scheme, following those incidents"!
The other factor, not helping Police, is the Law regarding Juvenile Offenders, as they "are ham strung, when it comes to arrest and detaining" and not helped by the Courts or Lawyers. Thus the Ram raids, the Police will have an idea of who/whom - but due to current Legal Statutes - will have to "sit on hands" for time being.
The above is not helped by [1] - cultural family issues, [2] - idle time that involves Youth = criminal activity.
Also NZ, firearms are being used more commonly -
- by who/whom
- where did they obtain those and/or that weapon(s)
So are we going to see the onset of "Chicago style gun rage"(a City in the US that has more deaths from shootings - usually Black on Black) - here in NZ?
ANON, of New Zealand.
