David Farrar: Surely this should get the maximum sentence?

The Herald reports on how Kayla Pawa was kidnapped and tortured by gang members who wanted to access her partner’s cryptocurrency stash. The details include:

* held hostage for a month

* tortured with a blowtorch, threatening to burn her eyeballs out

* had the barrel of a gun put in her mouth

* forced to sleep on an extremely cold bathroom floor

* kept bound in the boot of a car

* instructed to dig her own grave

* threatened to cut her fingers off

* hit her in the ribs with a baseball bat

* multiple men used a hammer on her hands

* refused to feed her for five days

* held a meat cleaver to her shoulder

* beating her unconscious

* threats of amputating an entire limb

The maximum charge for kidnapping is 14 years but to be honest even that seems insufficient for what they did. The repeated tortures should result in a cumulative, not concurrent, sentence.

Sadly I suspect Harris will get less than ten years.

David Farrar runs Curia Market Research, a specialist opinion polling and research agency, and the popular Kiwiblog where this article was sourced. He previously worked in the Parliament for eight years, serving two National Party Prime Ministers and three Opposition Leaders.

Not in favour of State capital punishment, I can only devoutly hope that their own prison mates can make their lives a misery - don't really believe in Hell either - but I'd like to. That is so amazingly inhuman, I can't believe it!

Maori offenders?

My presumption.

Says it all.

10 years, you have to joking ?
Bets its only home detention after the judge adjusts the 14 years down after finding the perpetrators suffered from post colonialsation trauma, poor potty training,, and / or the myriad of other things that modern European have foisted on them.

At least with home D, they can watch more violent movies and learn some more extortion techniques.

Just think. The Greens and TPM want to close prisons altogether. As partners of a future coalition government, this possibility isn't that far fetched.

Oh David, ppfffft. Pull your head in. 10-14 years. Doubt it. Once the taxpayers have paid for the cultural report and the sob stories, the woke judge will have him out in 5, probably less. That judge should be held accountable. Can I be afforded the same lenient sentences ? Who said crime doesnt pay?
