The left and many media claim that large rates increases were necessary due to under-investment in core infrastructure such as water. Now while it is true more needs to be spent on water infrastructure, they overlook that there is a huge amount of spending on discretionary and wasteful stuff.
Here’s the list I have been keeping, just for Wellington City.
1. $593 million on social housing capital (most councils don’t do social housing)
2. $510 million for a sludge minimisation facility at Moa Point
3. $330 million on rebuilding the town hall so we have another music venue
4. $325 million on social housing operational (most councils don’t do social housing)
5. $240 million on Civic Square
6. $236 million on food recycling (will cost $19,000 per tonne of greenhouse gas emissions reduction)
7. $189 million on Te Matapihi library (the three existing CBD libraries are great)
8. $180 million on the Takina convention centre (which somewhat is managing to lose money on every exhibition it hosts)
9. $160 million on cycleways
10. $139 million on removing cars and redeveloping the Golden Mile
11. $55 million to upgrade destroy Thorndon Quay
12. $42 million on renovating St James Theatre
13. $32 million to Reading Cinemas (attempted but failed)
14. $13 million on a carpark building
That is a staggering $3 billion, which equates to around $38,000 per household.
Now most councils aren’t quite as fiscally laxative as Wellington, but all of them will have large expensive non-core projects. Rates increases are a choice, not a necessity.

Transport infrastructure, wastewater treatment, public spaces and libraries?! Oh my pearl-clutching-goodness, what woke nonsense will councils throw money away on next?!!? David Farrer are you sure you’re not a parodist because that opinion peace is hilariously weak bro.
And do we have any idea how much gets paid to Māori to allow them to have input on Resource Consents and the resulting restraints?!
Does anyone else find it interesting that d Farrar continually bemoans council and Maori costs but never mentions the 2 major contributors to NZers extraordinary cost inflation: groceries and electricity?
As Margaret Thatcher said about socialists running out of other peoples' money.....
Cycle ways aren't a nice to have. They are infrastructure. People want options on how they commute. No one sees a footpath as a nice to have! Why is cycling in a different category 🤔
David, no surprises there really. Good list for starters tho. How many millions are wasted on compulsory Maori classes, incorrect treaty indoctrination and morning and afternoon prayer sessions? Just curious.
Because when we have cycleways, as we do in Island Bay, people still ride their bikes on the footpath.
Just wait til David hears about what’s going to happen with our NZ Super bill in the next couple of decades. The current coalition is asleep at the wheel!
The only economic good / factor it can move is labour, and then only a very small minority and select few with the type of job, physical ability, time and desire to do so. Proper infrastructure provides a true mass social and economic benefit.
To anon @ 6.21am, no not really at all. Tell me, why do you think groceries and electricity prices skyrocketed under the far left Jacinda govt?
Perhaps Mr Farrar could cover your groceries and energy points off also
, but he's making comment about $3b of wasteful spending under the WCC Mayor -tory whanau.
The same reason electricity proces are sky rocketing now.
Swarbrick, Simpson, and Brooking have been caught with their hands in the insurance cartels cookie jar.
A cartel which relies on. The "good favour" of politicians so much they hired an ex politician whose sole job is to keep handing out cookies so government doesn't look too closely at their obvious anti competitive price fixing.
The issue is Mr Farrar writes maori racism inflaming articles almost every day, but I noticed you didn't post a link to one article mr Farrar has written about the NZ oligarchs (as prof McCullough calls them).
It's almost as if Farrar is producing decoys to distract kiwis from the multibillion dollar annual theft by his corporate sponsors.
To anon at 6.31 and 10.38.
If David Farrar didn't write articles highlighting how crooked and racist the left are and what is actually happening, who would? Stuff? TVNZ? The reality is if it weren't for blogs like this, reporting facts and the truth this country would be in a far worse position. Do you know how few people actually trust the media now days?
I'm sorry that you find electricity prices too much for your liking. I have invested in most of the utility providers so it's neither here nor there for me. Anon 10.38, What are you actually wanting....? A hand out? Pity? You seem to have a dislike for anyone that's done well tho. Try to move on else life can be long and miserable carrying a big chip like that. :) all the best. :)
