National issued a press release headed “National’s plan is working”, welcoming the Reserve Bank’s decision to hold interest rates.
The Reserve Bank predicts inflation will reach 4.4 per cent by Christmas.
If that is National’s plan, we need a new one.
The alternative Labour/Greens/TOP/Te Pāti Māori coalition does not even have a credible plan to control spending and inflation.
We also need a new finance minister.
The good news is that, whoever wins the election, we will get one.
Nicola Willis is a list-only candidate. On current polling, National is winning so many electorates that it elects no list MPs.
The better news is that National voters appear to be shifting their party votes to ACT to avoid wasting their votes.
ACT’s David Seymour is becoming a serious candidate for finance minister.
The even better news is that ACT has a credible plan to control government spending.
Seymour would need to avoid Nicola Willis’s mistake.
Willis left Labour’s Reserve Bank Board and Governor in place far too long. She then approved the appointment of Anna Breman as Governor.
On Wednesday, Breman voted to hold interest rates. Her vote was decisive in the four-to-three decision.
The three dissenting members warned that delaying an increase risks sustained inflation and the need for even higher interest rates later.
What exactly is National celebrating?
We need a new economic plan, a new finance minister and a new Reserve Bank Governor.
We may get all three.
The Honourable Richard Prebble CBE is a former member of the New Zealand Parliament. Initially a member of the Labour Party, he joined the newly formed ACT New Zealand party under Roger Douglas in 1996, becoming its leader from 1996 to 2004. This article was sourced HERE
