Alistair Boyce: Why ‘Golriz’ Matters

The Golriz Ghahraman story is not just about Golriz and certainly not about the obvious deflection of mental health and wider parliamentary culture. The saga is a snapshot in time, emblematic of a failing, vacuous Green party, an exposure of a false, self-righteous ideology. 

I suspect NZ political history will eventually point to the event as a significant and poignant marker of the demise of social justice progressivism based on identity politics. Failed, over-reaching ideology succumbing to conservative reality, just like the 2023 election. So, while Golriz has done the right thing and resigned the issues raised still require ongoing scrutiny, something you will not find in mainstream media (MSM).

Simple question but a complex and confronting one, especially to answer. 

When Te Pati Maori hierarchy are confronted with the question a contortion of confusion ensues and they run for the hills and the relative safety of established post-colonial New Zealand institutions. 

Is it “noise, noise, noise”, an ongoing ‘revolution by stealth’ or a ‘disparate rebellion’? It is certainly an ongoing continuum of activist and elite Maori being emboldened, empowered and entitled by public institutions with only unsettling paths to solutions that can never be fully resolved as the shifting sands of historical revisionism persist.

Over the last decade the Wellington City Council (WCC) has been captured by a ‘Greens’ led socialist left-wing rump that has dominated the decision-making with an ‘alarmist’ climate change agenda, seeking to turn Wellington into the ‘greenest’ capital city in the world. Unfortunately, this is it at any expense with little fiscal restraint and is actively aided and abetted by the ‘goldrush’ from the 6^th Labour government. The city’s infrastructure is subjugated as the all-consuming priority is the ‘rapid rollout’ of carbon reducing strategies spearheaded by the cycleways projects of ‘Let’s Get Wellington Moving’(LGWM).

We have witnessed the violent intolerance of mob rule that was countenanced from its elected government and actively supported by a compliant, fomenting media.

There are no winners here, except the forces of division and intolerance.

The tragedy is transgender rights, celebration of transgender humanity and its mainstream acceptance may always be tainted by the violent, self-congratulatory extremism on display in Auckland’s Albert Park.

Jacinda Ardern had stood in parliament advocating the right to protest and appointed a police commissioner to ‘police by consent’.  This necessarily requires inclusive public policy and reactive force to protest.

The Labour government’s arguably unnecessary mandates pushed a peaceful populace over the edge in a growing combustion of angry disgust as the ‘kind’ leader cast her own people out of the team. Jacinda Ardern stated there would be no consequences if you were not vaccinated. The unvaccinated, kiwis stuck out in the world and unnecessary extended lockdowns with all the petty rules spread a cancer of division and false self-righteousness. The unvaccinated lost jobs, livelihoods and socio-economic status.

There should be no celebration.

There should be an overwhelming sense of relief.

Jacinda Ardern has done the right thing by herself, her family and finally the people of New Zealand.

In just over a year, we have witnessed the disintegration of a leader whose 2020 tenure of absolute electoral driven power started with overwhelming public support, gratitude and reverence but descended into a myopic and confused authoritarian rule. We have graphically endured a lesson of incoherent government and state overreach which has been on a march of portentous marginalisation through the private sector. It has elevated a ballooning and unproductive state sector of ‘bourgeois’ excess.
