Back in late 2025 the government signalled nationwide council amalgamation plans to replace regional councils with Combined Territories Boards. Following a three-month ultimatum in May, 2026, councils have until August, 2026, to voluntarily merge under the “Head Start” pathway or face forced consolidation from Wellington.

Did we hear that little tit bit of information from Nicola Willis during her budget speech? Yeah Right!

I am well and truly stepping out of my“wheelhouse” with this article I found when trawling through some of the many websites I access each day.

I couldn’t help but think there are certain parallels with a section, probably a growing section, of New Zealand society that have similar thoughts to those the author is debunking. Does our youth think they are “hard done by” rather than see the advantages of our country and the modern world?

Tuesdays announcement by Local Government minister Simon Watts that legislation will be passed that strips unelected appointees of their power to vote on your council committee, as expected, all the usual suspects leapt to the cell phone to call their favourite journalist.

Hasting Mayor was no exception!

Pee Kay: A PYRHIC VICTORY?

I’m presuming many readers will have received e-mails from political party’s and political ginger groups announcing their roles in yesterdays announcement that the government will change the law so only elected councillors can vote on council committees.

And we all say well done to them all for the parts they played in getting the government to move on this issue where democracy was being pushed aside and political strength and power would be determined by your ancestry! The cornerstone of democracy, one person, one vote will be preserved!

Pee Kay: This is only the tip of a very large iceberg!

Have you ever heard of Oranga Marae? No?

Despite the name, it is not actually a physical place.

Oranga Marae is a government fund dedicated entirely to upgrading, rebuilding, and maintaining marae across New Zealand. It operates as a joint Crown investment programme between Te Puni Kokiri (Ministry of Māori Development) and the Department of Internal Affairs. The Oranga Marae programme claims to offer the advice and funding needed to sustain both physical marae structures and their cultural heritage.

With all that in mind, isn’t the question – Why?

2026 finds New Zealand standing at a critical political and social intersection.

The path a future New Zealand takes, will in some part, likely be decided at the ballot box on November 7th and will most probably be central to heated and continued constitutional discussion and argument into the late 2020s!

With a population of 5.3 million New Zealand is wrestling with a fragile economy and a constitutional and an identity crisis. If our country is to ever secure a prosperous future, surely it is now time to turn away from the politically imposed obstructions of co-governance, partnership and the movement towards Maori sovereignty.
