I am sorry I can't agree entirely with this cartoon. I do however, agree with the majority of your cartoons but not this one.
That is because we have a shockingly bad education system particularly this century with plummeting standards in the basics.
I have spent most of my adult life involved in the reading wars and believe literacy is the cornerstone of social justice but we have neglected to concentrate on this to our shame and detriment.
The statistics tell us two out of three students who fail to achieve in reading will end up in prison or welfare. NZ has the longest tail of underachievement in the developed world. It also has a high prison population per capita.
I have just read a paper on Literacy and Mental health by Dr Kerry Hempenstall which reviews dozens of studies on the devastating effect illiteracy and innumeracy has on children's well being, mental health and behaviour from an early age which does not improve with age.
Here are quotes to summarize "the poorer the academic performance, the higher the deliquency ". (Manguin and Loeber, 1996 p246" And " more suffer life harm from illiteracy than from parental abuse, accidents and all other childhood diseases and disorders combined" Whitehurst,G (2003)
For those really determined employment is still available despite limited abilities. But it is not attractive relative benefits which allow time and energy for other pursuits.
