Peter Williams: Give it a rest Rosemary

I see that Rosemary Penwarden has been at it again.

She’s the Dunedin grandmother who is a serial eco protestor, a woman who is actually on bail after being convicted of forgery and using a forged document. That was after a trial in Dunedin in June following her attempt to call off the Petroleum Exploration and Production conference in Queenstown in 2019.

Rosemary is due to be sentenced on that conviction next month, although up until today (August 29th) I wouldn’t have been surprised if she’d been discharged without conviction.

But there she was again, this time in Wellington, holding up rush hour traffic and cementing her hand to the road, all in the name of trying to get the government to take the threat of climate change seriously.

She is obviously committed to the cause, but thankfully a hard-nosed judge in Wellington, Peter Hobbs, brother of the late All Black captain Jock, was having none of her nonsense and threw her into the slammer for the night.

Here’s a few pieces of advice for Rosemary. You might be a retired scientist but you really should button back a bit on the climate alarmism.

Maybe you could read the words of the new head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the very measured Scotsman Jim Skea.

He was asked recently if he considered climate change the worst crisis that mankind faces. It is he says, just one of the biggest.

Skea, in the time that he has been in charge, has made a point of casting doubt on the apocalyptic claims of the environmentalist movement. As this column has reported before he says “the world will not end if it warms by more than 1.5 degrees. It will however be a more dangerous world.”

And then in words that could be directly addressed to Rosemary Penwarden Jim Skea says, “if you constantly communicate the message that we are all doomed to extinction, then that polarises people and prevents them from taking the necessary steps to get a grip on climate change.”

So there Rosemary, from the head of the IPCC – get a grip.

Oh, and when you’re let out of the cells in Wellington, have you thought about going up to protest at the Chinese embassy? The latest reports have China increasing their emissions by 4 percent in just the first quarter of this year, and the country is on track to set a new record for annual emissions and solidifying their position as the emitter of 30 percent of the world’s man-made greenhouse gas emissions.

Frankly Rosemary, protesting the lack of action by the New Zealand government is a waste of time. Go fire some shots at the big guns.

But then you might find yourself not treated as leniently as you are by our court system before you go back to Dunedin.

I presume you’ll be swimming and then walking or biking home. After all you can’t use fossil fuel to travel, can you? Because that would wreck the planet. And those inter island ferries use diesel you know.

Peter Williams was a writer and broadcaster for half a century. Now watching from the sidelines. Peter blogs regularly on Peter’s Substack - where this article was sourced.

Green/Environment/Climate protesters are all like neo-facists.

They are 'do as we say not as we do' type people who see a the world through a sad lonely lense that like all cultists cannot step away from their view and analyse it from afar to see where the holes may be.

You are right Peter how do these people who seemingly move freely around the planet protesting using the very thing that enables them to do so.

They like the 'de-colonise' New Zealand folk cannot recognise that in reaching their cultish goal they are destroying everything that got them where they live today.

I doubt very much that this person gave much thought to the chemicals used in the 'concrete glue' used, where it was made, how it was transported and actually the damge it will do to her personally.....remember it is designe to glue concret to concrete without failure...human flesh not so much.

Rosemary epitomises that immortal phrase:-
"just cos youz a scientist, darlin, don't mean you fink straight"

I mean anyone who cements her hand to the road clearly has lost more than a few brain cells on her travels through life.
And talking about travels, how exactly did Rantin' Rosie get from Dunedin to Wellington?
Walk or bike, did she? Even if she did I'm bloody sure she didn't swim Cook Strait so she used fossil fuels for at least part of her journey, if not the whole lot.

Yet another climate hypocrite who has filled her head with scary fairy stories which have chased away any fleeting relationship she may have had with real science.

Ramblin'Rosie may like to glue herself to the midland railway line between Christchurch and the West Coast to prevent coal trains bringing and dumping their loads at Lyttleton, to be taken to China and other countries to fuel coal-fired power stations there. May suggest the Otira Tunnel?

Surely the answer would be to just fence her off and leave her cemented to the road for several days. Similar to the idiots that glued themselves to a car display room in Germany. Left to cry like babies as toilet issues and thirst took over.

Hahaha šŸ¤£ šŸ¤£. Love it, fence her off and plant a small shrubbery around her.
The gardening ,whilst cemented, might calm her down.

an academic once explained that they felt guilty of buying strawberries at the german supermarkets as they were imported from spain (thus guilt-laden with carbon). so their solution was to fly to spain and eat it fresh from the orchards. i thought it was a joke, until i realised that they are an expert in sustainability!!!

In answer to the Green panic merchants, the following FACTS need to be considered:-

The IPCC is consistently wrong in it's predictions of doom.

1/ No 50 million climate refugees by 2010, as they forecast in 2005. Zero, in fact.
2/ No increase in rate of sea level rising.
3/ Artic Ice is still there, and not melting away
3/ Antarctic Ice is actually growing.
4/ Extreme weather events, world-wide are NOT increasing.
5/ Forest fires, world-wide, are not increasing.
6/ Yes – the planet has been slowly warming, (in fits and starts) as its only 172 years since we came out of the Little Ice Age in 1850. (That rise has been just 0.8°C).
7/ Also, all of the dire predictions made by everybody from King Charles to Attenborough, simply did not occur. It was all apocalyptic panic merchant behavior.
8/ The IPCC has recently admitted that it’s multiplying factor used in all their “computer models” is wrong, and all their predictions up till now have been highly exaggerated.

There is NO "climate emergency".

Rosemary acted with malevolent intent of causing sundry harm. She should have been left to earn the consequences of her action, safely fenced off so that no harm resulted from the actions of anyone else. Her life is her own to spend and if it is glued to a road no one has any right to interfere. Removing her from the road was an abuse of her human rights

Every now and then there's a trendy protest theme, yet if we are being fair there is quite often at least some degree of 'possibility' or 'maybe' mixed up in the concerns of the protestors.
However, and we need to be clear: there is no right of protest (freedom of expression) that condones destructive and/or disruptive actions by extremists.
I agree with those who suggest leaving this particular fool where she chose to sit down - just place orange cones around her with a sign saying "Protestor" so drivers understand what's happening and avoid her accordingly.
She's made her protest, travellers still get to where they need to be - no real problem. Eventually she will remove herself and go away to think of her next display.

Was her hand crushed? Concrete shrinks as it dries.
Our road sealing is probably not suitable but I read recently that police(in Germany?) cut around a protesters hand and left him to cope with the seal still stuck to his hand. Take note you people in blue.
