Radio NZ reports:
The Education Ministry spent nearly $3 million on one course that enrolled just 42 students and had 29 graduates over two years.
Annual funding of $4.5m for the Te Kawa Matakura course was axed in last month’s Budget, with the government citing consistent underspends and low enrolments.
The level 5 diploma in the knowledge and customs of indidual iwi had just two intakes of students in Te Tai Tokerau in 2020 and 2021.
This is staggering. They spent $100,000 per graduate for a level 5 diploma course!

Would love a follow up on the graduates. I wonder what work they are in now, if it utilises this qualification, and how much they earn.
David, good work as usual.
However, I betting the cost is greater than what you have mentioned. No doubt this is labour mis spending at its best.
How many of those 29 graduates are now working and contributing and how many have their hand out as usual getting a benefit?
I just love being proved wrong, really I do. But certain people just always seem to want to prove me right.
The course material would be of great interest but I bet that it is near imposible to access. No one would be so foolish as to provide a comprehensive textbook. Many graduate were likely in cosy consultation positions and were seeking to add likely obstructiveness skills to their armoury. Many others may have concluded that they can extort adequately with existing abilities.
