The Local Government Commission has published a draft code of conduct for local authority members. The idea is to have a standard one as best practice, but what truely have come up with is so terrible it should be scrapped.
Rather than focus on non-controversial stuff such as work in good faith and don’t defame people, they start with five paragraphs of highly contentious views on the role of the Treaty. This means that any Councillor who disagrees with these views could be hounded by code of conduct complaints.
They also have lots of other clauses that all restrict Crs being able to actually hold the Council to account.
In my view this draft is so terrible, the Minister should remove from the LGC this works programme.

If the LG Commission proposal is supported by Luxon/Watt and National.......then the party will be damned in 2026. It is really a Left and pro-Maori party - no other conclusion possible.
Why is the Local Government Commission even a thing?
Unquestionably it should be thrown out. Why isn’t that already happening? Where is the decisive action and leadership???
Absolutely, David.
This yet another racist, woke intrusion by the LGC.
Check out the 3 members - they are all Left Wing pro governance types chosen by (guess who ?) Comrade Ardern.
If only Luxon would stand up to this bullshit !
Spot on David. This is not what is meant for a code—agreement among elected members. Note this section of the template where a councillor can breech code by not attending a meeting or not going on some random skills course
That should read "pro co-governance"
What a load of woke virtue signalling with this post David. I’ve never read anything so woke or so virtue or so signalling.
This would require him having legs and knowing which way is up!
Anons 11.11 and 4.22. Rather poor taste. I agree with David that the report should be thrown out. What worries me is that it even saw the light of day and signed off by govt ministers, Why does this commission even exist?
Would you please post any update on this, such as if they heed your comments. I’ve gone through the draft and it is littered with rubbish that has no business in CoC.
