Christopher Luxon, we have had enough! You can’t keep acting against your voter base: the ones you rely on for your bread-and-butter votes that will get you over the line in next year’s election. On matters of race, we are in last straw territory. There are thousands of us now seething as we witness this never-ending pandering to Māori. I’m not talking about the majority of Māori who live like the rest of us, I’m talking about the continual pandering to the likes of the fella in the cowboy hat.
It is a mystery to me why Luxon is doing this. He is attempting to accommodate those more likely to give him two fingers rather than thanks. These types don’t give a damn about anyone but themselves. And the average Māori, like the rest of us, doesn’t give a damn about them, either. We don’t buy the narrative that what is being done is for the benefit of everyone: these actions are clearly race based.
I see Minister of Maori Development Tama Potaka has made seven new appointments to governance roles in Māori entities, bringing leadership, expertise and experience to the organisations to further support Māori development. That we can probably live with, while adding the proviso that they need to start paying tax like any other business.
Where we part company is the comments by the minister when he says this will help advance te reo Māori revitalisation, strengthen the Waitangi Tribunal and realise the social and economic potential of Māori. According to Minister Potaka this benefits Māori and everyone. Really? How? What has any of that got to do with his role as Māori development minister? What has it got to do with Māori businesses?
I think I know the sort of reply I would receive from the minister. A whole lot of gobbledygook about how when Māori prosper we all prosper. If that is the case, we are not buying it. Of course Māori should prosper: we should all prosper, but not in a race-based setting. Māori businesses should be on the same footing as any other.
I take it te reo revitalisation means a million of us will be confidently using te reo Māori by 2040, as stated in the article. Well, all I can say is good luck with that. As for the Waitangi Tribunal, we don’t want it strengthened: we want its wings severely clipped.
This is not the way to retain support and win over swinging voters. We are lucky to have other parties on the right where we can put our vote. Luckily for the prime minister, the left is not an option as that side of the House is chock full of Hamas sympathisers. But, Luxon and National are misreading the room. We want to live as one people and not in a country where endless amounts of preferential treatment are given based on race. In business, as everywhere, there should be a level playing field.
The prime minister needs to realise the economy, which is in a hole not entirely of the government’s making, is being held back by iwi and hapū. There is little point talking about growth and appointing Nicola Willis as minister to encourage it if this sort of nonsense is allowed to carry on. It has to stop. Surely this completely destroys the point of the fast-track legislation. I know of one company which has now given up due to excessive opposition and says that even the fast-track legislation is not solving the problem of achieving business goals and success.
Whatever is available to be accessed in any given area of government should be the same for everyone. We can never live as one people unless this is the case. The race issue may not rate highly in the polls, but there are many of us dismayed at the broken promises littering the right side of politics regarding it. This situation must be corrected. Our patience is running thin.
The polls, while not to be taken too seriously at this point in the election cycle, are nevertheless telling a story: one that illustrates the fact that there is significant disillusionment and irritation with the course the government is on. We see this as a negative to equality and putting all of us on the same footing. We do not object to assistance being given on the basis of genuine need. What we do not agree with is our money being used to support what amounts to a race-based system.
I think Luxon’s business skills are a definite advantage to this government; however, I think his political skills are severely lacking. I urge him take some advice because this government is seriously in need of a change of direction. His personal poll rating should be giving him pause for thought and a rethink on his own performance. The government is suffering because of it.
I am not suggesting the party change him as leader, but I am suggesting he, as leader, needs to change for the good of the party. We don’t need the Māori Party and we don’t need the seats they stand in or sit on. The situation must be addressed. What happens between now and the next election is critical to the outcome of it. Luxon needs to act now!

send it to the "new" NZH editor for publication, this needs to be read by as many Kiwis as possible.
These are the board members of the national party
https://www.national.org.nz/bod
Everyone reading this and agreeing with jc should be actively writing to these people with this message- for the sake of this country He Puapua must end now!
It's interesting commentators keep identifying one issue (voters repeatedly told pollsters they're not that worried about) and blame it on one man.
At first I thought the race baiting was done by Labour Party spin doctors.
Now I'm considering it is funded by the suspicually super profitable, cost of living crisis causing: electricity, banking, insurance and supermarket oligopolies.
Where has Luxon gone?
Luxon has bizarrely disappeared whilst Nicola Willis announces she is ignoring more market study recommendations.
Just Party vote ACT or NZF next election . Yes, electorate vote Blue to keep the left out but Luxon is a huge dissappointment for NZ.
I’m a property developer and aspire to become a tobacco lobbyist and he is on the money for me. Your complaints seem irrelevant, guy.
Excellent article, JC. Good that you point out that the majority of Maori do not support the Maori Party as it harms them.
All true. But the PM's staff will read /screen this - and summarize the main point. Nothing more.
Who knows if L. will last - or his intentions? Like Ardern, he may see better opportunities elsewhere. Clearly noone in Nat or Lab. intends to challenge Maori - which must happen one day. ACT will be given that complex task.
Your words here sum it up, JC :-
"Luxon and National are misreading the room. We want to live as one people and not in a country where endless amounts of preferential treatment are given based on race. "
Yes, LISTEN UP LUXON !!
You were voted in to STOP the rampant, apartheid, racist division being forced upon our nation.
Luxon has been a disappointment and certainly not a change agent. “Steady as she goes” is the order of the day. What a wasted three years and how sad for New Zealand.
This is absolutely spot on! The monies being mis-allocated by Potake to race -based stupidity need to be sequestered and re-allocated to areas such as health and those entities that truly do benefit all New Zealanders equally. Yes the race-based Maori seats must be abolished, the Waitangi Tribunal curtailed (or better still also abolished). If Luxon and National wish to remain relevant in 2026 there is not a lot of time left for them to get this done.
Totally agree JC. No need to add further comment beyond endorse the call for Luxon to stand up to maori and show leadership as PM.
Steve Ellis
Write to your respective national MPs. Send them jc’s post. I have done this. I also told Mike Butterick national isn’t getting my party vote and that if act or nz have a credible candidate, he isn’t getting my vote either
Well said JC!
You have simply yet precisely captured the deep-seated issue and danger of race based funding!
In 2020 the Labour government’s support amounted to more than $900 million, specifically for maori. In 2021 it was more than $1 billion allocated expressly and exclusively for maori and, again, another $1 billion in 2022!
Where and how was that $2 billion spent? I wonder if high end car dealerships saw some of it???
In 2023 the New Zealand economy was tanking and we officially entered a recession.
That saw specific funding for maori decrease to $825 million!
Willie Jackson stated Labour's Māori caucus were "all satisfied" with the $825 million 'Māori Budget.'
Luxon must have a very strong hold on, not only Nationals parliamentary team but the National Party’s hierarchy!
On the evening of 14th of October 2023, it was confirmed New Zealanders had voted for the National Party to form a government that would nullify the He Puapua agenda, a government that would bring to a halt the increasing levels of Maori privilege and control in New Zealand!
In actuality, the opposite has happened, is happening!
JC, you say "It is a mystery to me why Luxon is doing this." No. It's not a mystery. Watch this video which explains why he is doing what he is doing: https://youtu.be/hq1WqpGJKR4?si=ILgxk2IETQPubNDh
Maybe the time has passed when even Jacinda's team of expert spin doctors could make him electable.
Maybe it's time for National to prove it's credentials as centre right.
Dear Prime Minister
You need to listen to your voters!!!. You are over estimating the likelihood of civil war, with the reining in of maori policy. Yes some will be upset, but the majority will be very pleased.
Property agent checking in: go Luxon go, keep it up brother!
I am going to "pick up" on the paragraph's/comments (3 to 5) regarding "Maori development".
The writer 'calls' for a unified approach to what New Zealander and it People should be achieving. For many years we have had New Zealander's go out, establish business and strive to do just that.
But are we now unified?
Why do I say that - well on TVNZ News of recent days a news item on the Maori Queen, with retinue & Kapa Haka Party visiting the UAE to promote sales of Kiwi Fruit, grown by Maori.
That Retinue also included a News reporter (of Maori Descent), film crew who 'vibrantly' captured the moments, for our biased TVNZ to then "use as news of the moment"!
By my biggest concern, is where was NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade (including The Minister of same, along with The Minister of Trade & Development) - who are usually the "go to Ministers & Ministry" to oversee the approach & sales pitch.
My thoughts on seeing this news item - "was that Maoridom has decided to go it alone". If they achieve an objective here, where will they go next.
I can see Europe on the/their agenda.
Such steps/action can then be seen as " giving the bird" to any/all Govt approaches to a National/Nationwide Trade Development across the World.
That is not "a unified approach" to New Zealand going forward, that is where one Ethnicity uses a hardnose approach for their own means - not that of The Nation.
What is needed is a selective disease that only infects Maori owned kiwifruit, i.e. one that it is truly racist. Oh, hang on that would indicate that Maori are special and deserving of different treatment - however, we know that they are just the same as the rest of us. That shows how damned stupid "sales of fruit grown by Maori" is. My truth is that I cannot stand kiwifruit, it is bloomin' horrible, so I'm not at all prejudice, it is all unpalatable. Besides, they use some pretty awful sprays, particularly hydrogen cyanamide and the Maori growers have been instrumental in heavy lobbying of the EPA to keep using the awful stuff, so go figure what the outcome will be. Saudi Arabia is amongst those Countries that have banned its use, so interesting that the UAE is interested in importing our Maori grown produce!
PS. Hydrogen cyanamide is also banned in Europe, and its re-registration is currently under review in the United States.
Michael Laws on The Plaform has succinct observations about Potaka announcements.
Excellent idea - they may not listed ( or even read the item). But it may not be screened and binned in the same way as Luxon's office staff would do.
Also, citizens must now demand a referendum now on democracy. Luxon thinks he buried ACT/s TP Bill - but NZers must not forget that he is refusing their right to decide. Luxon is behaving like a dictator - perhaps on advice from his minders. He will survive - as Ardern did. But NZ will not - it is fast becoming an ethnocracy.
Anyone reading this should think of their children and grand children - and take action.
Still trying to figure if Luxon is Potaka's hand maiden or vice versa.
Luxon interfered with the selection process and picked Potaka.
