Bob Edlin: The nuclear threat that has been obliterated and cut out like a cancer – so what next?

Is there a difference between a precision strike and a surgical one?

We ask because in June last year the White House declared: –

Iran’s Nuclear Facilities Have Been Obliterated — and Suggestions Otherwise are Fake News

Yep.

Obliterated.

That means much the same thing as annihilated Or demolished. Or wiped off the face of the earth.

The statement, posted on June 25, 2025, advised:

The world is far safer after President Donald J. Trump’s highly successful, decisive precision strikes against the Iranian regime’s key nuclear facilities.

Take it from those who actually know:

President Trump: “Monumental Damage was done to all Nuclear sites in Iran, as shown by satellite images. Obliteration is an accurate term! The white structure shown is deeply imbedded into the rock, with even its roof well below ground level, and completely shielded from flame. The biggest damage took place far below ground level. Bullseye!!!”

And:

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth: “Based on everything we have seen — and I’ve seen it all — our bombing campaign obliterated Iran’s ability to create nuclear weapons. Our massive bombs hit exactly the right spot at each target and worked perfectly. The impact of those bombs is buried under a mountain of rubble in Iran; so anyone who says the bombs were not devastating is just trying to undermine the President and the successful mission.”

This week Trump is talking of something that sounds more like … well, the language could be described as surgical:

The New York Post headlined it:-

Trump declares victory over Iran’s nuke threat after cutting out ‘cancer,’ says Tehran ‘afraid’ to make deal

President Trump declared victory over Iran’s nuclear threat after boasting US and Israeli forces cut out the “cancer” – before going on to claim that the Islamic Republic is “afraid” of striking a deal.

“What we had to do is get rid of the cancer,” Trump told the National Republican Congressional Committee Wednesday. “We had to cut out the cancer. The cancer was Iran with a nuclear weapon. We’ve cut it out. Now we’re going to finish it off.”Trump’s bullish remarks come just days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed Iran had no ability to enrich uranium, vowing to crush Tehran’s nuclear program to “dust.”

Does this mean we can sleep soundly tonight?

Maybe not.

Just a few weeks ago Trump was demanding Iran’s “unconditional surrender” as the American and Israeli military continued to launch strikes.

Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump said: “There will be no deal with Iran except UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!

“After that, and the selection of a GREAT & ACCEPTABLE Leader(s), we, and many of our wonderful and very brave allies and partners, will work tirelessly to bring Iran back from the brink of destruction, making it economically bigger, better, and stronger than ever before.

“IRAN WILL HAVE A GREAT FUTURE. MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN (MIGA!).”

That suggested Trump was not interested in a negotiated settlement to the war.

But the news today is of Trump saying Iran is “desperate” to make a ceasefire deal after four weeks of fighting.

Iran is saying not only that this is not true, but that they aren’t even talking directly with the US about a possible end to the war.

Both countries have come up with their own set of demands they say must happen before the fighting stops.

The ABC reports:

Trump has consistently maintained that his administration is holding positive and constructive talks with Iranian officials, which Iran has flatly denied.

“They want to make a deal so badly, but they’re afraid to say it because they will be killed by their own people,” he said earlier this week.

Trump hasn’t revealed who the US is talking with inside Iran.

And if these talks are indeed happening, there’s every chance the US may not even be speaking with the right people, or those who have the authority to make decisions.

The US has offered a 15-point ceasefire plan, which has been passed to Iran through intermediaries from Pakistan.

The plan hasn’t been publicly disclosed, but reportedly demands (among other things) that Iran:
  • Commit to never pursuing nuclear weapons and dismantle its nuclear facilities
Those would be the nuclear weapons and facilities that were obliterated in June last year and – in recent days – have been cut out like a cancer.

The war is not "Trumps war" as hinted at in so many opinion pieces like this one. The war is the US and Israels attempt to demolish a destabilising regime. Although the oppressive regime was tolerated for 47 years, I suggest this war was triggered by the massacre of 1,100 Israelis on October 7th and around 40,000 Iranians in January. As well as numerous proxy attacks in the region over the years.

Stop point scoring regarding the Uranium issue. It has now been discovered the undiscovered Uranium is 60% enriched and requires 90% enrichment for nuclear weapons. This takes three weeks.

What has been revealed is how unstable the IRGC regime actually is. It seems probable they would use nuclear weapons if they had them.
No good living in Iran if you are a woman, gay, non-islamist, a writer, a poet, an artist or even it seems, an Olympic wrestler.
The above writer would need to change his name from Bob to Mohammad and be very careful what he wrote.

President Trump is not preventing the oil shipments, the IRGC is.

Iran would do well to demand the release of the Epstein files as a condition for peace.

I would trust Edlin's judgement over Janine's any day of the week. Edlin is a credible journalist with a clear grasp of the realities of life in Trump-world. His perpective is not confined to MAGA talking points as reported by Fox news. So Edlin understands why the Iran war is Trump's war of choice, driven not by compassion for the Iranian people, nor to protect the safety of the American people, but by the fact that he believes he can do anything he likes. His hand-picked Supreme Court said so. And for a deeply disturbed individual, interested only in his own wealth, power, and general aggrandisement, that's a very dangerous attitude. By the way, every war game played by the West involving war with Iran predicted the blockade of the Straits of Hormuz. How come Trump is the only US President not to know that? Here's a hint. Trump is on record as stating "we" are making a lot of money out of the rise in oil prices. So join the dots Janine.

Good grief Jones Boy...your TDS runs deep. You have no idea what a persons motives are until you have met them and formed your own judgement. Your own judgement not an opinion writers. What is the writer here actually saying of consequence?? They didn't obliterate all the uranium...well heavens above, who would have guessed? All information here is sourced from the MSM who are notoriously anti-Trump. So much so they alter his speeches.
We know you are left-wing and you are perfectly entitled to be. However anyone who supports the Antifa and left-wing anti semitic agenda is seriously lacking in judgement and humanity.
Stop watching ABC, CNN and the BBC it's fake news.
I can't really help you otherwise.

I don't need your help Janine. I'm perfectly capable of forming a judgement on a world leader's character without meeting them. That's the actually the usual process for most of us mere mortals who don't frequent the corridors of power. Don't believe what they say. See what they do. Mexico will pay for the wall Trump said. Our foreign customers will pay the tariffs Trump said. Deport the murderers and rapists Trump said. No new wars Trump said. WHOOPS. But since you clearly have a different perspective, I'm curious to know what you learned when you had your own audience with Trump. Must have been a moving experience.
