Is there a difference between a precision strike and a surgical one?
We ask because in June last year the White House declared: –
Iran’s Nuclear Facilities Have Been Obliterated — and Suggestions Otherwise are Fake News
Yep.
Obliterated.
That means much the same thing as annihilated Or demolished. Or wiped off the face of the earth.
The statement, posted on June 25, 2025, advised:
The world is far safer after President Donald J. Trump’s highly successful, decisive precision strikes against the Iranian regime’s key nuclear facilities.
Take it from those who actually know:
President Trump: “Monumental Damage was done to all Nuclear sites in Iran, as shown by satellite images. Obliteration is an accurate term! The white structure shown is deeply imbedded into the rock, with even its roof well below ground level, and completely shielded from flame. The biggest damage took place far below ground level. Bullseye!!!”
And:
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth: “Based on everything we have seen — and I’ve seen it all — our bombing campaign obliterated Iran’s ability to create nuclear weapons. Our massive bombs hit exactly the right spot at each target and worked perfectly. The impact of those bombs is buried under a mountain of rubble in Iran; so anyone who says the bombs were not devastating is just trying to undermine the President and the successful mission.”
This week Trump is talking of something that sounds more like … well, the language could be described as surgical:
The New York Post headlined it:-
President Trump declared victory over Iran’s nuclear threat after boasting US and Israeli forces cut out the “cancer” – before going on to claim that the Islamic Republic is “afraid” of striking a deal.

Trump declares victory over Iran’s nuke threat after cutting out ‘cancer,’ says Tehran ‘afraid’ to make deal
President Trump declared victory over Iran’s nuclear threat after boasting US and Israeli forces cut out the “cancer” – before going on to claim that the Islamic Republic is “afraid” of striking a deal.
“What we had to do is get rid of the cancer,” Trump told the National Republican Congressional Committee Wednesday. “We had to cut out the cancer. The cancer was Iran with a nuclear weapon. We’ve cut it out. Now we’re going to finish it off.”Trump’s bullish remarks come just days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed Iran had no ability to enrich uranium, vowing to crush Tehran’s nuclear program to “dust.”
Does this mean we can sleep soundly tonight?
Maybe not.
Just a few weeks ago Trump was demanding Iran’s “unconditional surrender” as the American and Israeli military continued to launch strikes.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump said: “There will be no deal with Iran except UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!
“After that, and the selection of a GREAT & ACCEPTABLE Leader(s), we, and many of our wonderful and very brave allies and partners, will work tirelessly to bring Iran back from the brink of destruction, making it economically bigger, better, and stronger than ever before.
“IRAN WILL HAVE A GREAT FUTURE. MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN (MIGA!).”
That suggested Trump was not interested in a negotiated settlement to the war.
But the news today is of Trump saying Iran is “desperate” to make a ceasefire deal after four weeks of fighting.
Iran is saying not only that this is not true, but that they aren’t even talking directly with the US about a possible end to the war.
Both countries have come up with their own set of demands they say must happen before the fighting stops.
The ABC reports:
Trump has consistently maintained that his administration is holding positive and constructive talks with Iranian officials, which Iran has flatly denied.
“They want to make a deal so badly, but they’re afraid to say it because they will be killed by their own people,” he said earlier this week.
Trump hasn’t revealed who the US is talking with inside Iran.
And if these talks are indeed happening, there’s every chance the US may not even be speaking with the right people, or those who have the authority to make decisions.
The US has offered a 15-point ceasefire plan, which has been passed to Iran through intermediaries from Pakistan.
The plan hasn’t been publicly disclosed, but reportedly demands (among other things) that Iran:
