Ryan Bridge: Winston was always going to turn on Luxon

This was always going to happen - the closer you get to the election, the more your friends become your enemies under MMP.

Winston's office released OIA docs showing Luxon's people wanted to go further in supporting Trump's war in Iran.

The Foreign Minister's office and MFAT, in their wisdom, cautioned against it.

For what most of us would probably understand to be good reasons.

This was straight after the war began.

This is a story in the Herald this morning:

A spokesman for Peters said Luxon’s support for the war was “imprudent” and would have “run counter to New Zealand’s national interests”.

“Experience matters in foreign policy.”

Then, last night, there were talks between the PM and Foreign Minster.

Luxon's hitting back - he's saying the emails mischaracterised Luxon's position.

He's saying the release of the emails puts politics ahead of the national interest.

So, as you can see, quite the mess.

The problem here is for Luxon, not for Peters.

Luxon is the one who has struggled to articulate himself on the war.

Peters has not.

Luxon is the one who's support has been falling in the polls.

Peters is the opposite.

Luxon is the one who's been there five minutes.

Peters is not.

If you were to poll kiwis and ask 'who do you trust more on matters of foreign affairs and war?', I imagine after 40 years in Parliament and a few runs at the job, Peters would come out on top.

Trying to put Peters in his place is hard enough to do at the best of times.

Trying to do it with one hand tied behind your back, the crowd cheering for your opponent, on a stage that's unfamiliar to you, is probably not going to end well.

Ryan Bridge is a New Zealand broadcaster who has worked on many current affairs television and radio shows. He currently hosts Newstalk ZB's Early Edition - where this article was sourced.

Coalition of chaos. Anyone who voted for this lot is getting exactly what they deserve

Luxon is not politician material. Certainly not Prime Minister material. Peters has far more charisma and experience. Luxon appears to take advice from dubious sources. Finlayson and Potaka spring to mind. If he had received better advice he might have managed a pass mark. Totally out of his depth, and unfortunately, many of his colleagues will suffer at this election because of his intransigence.

So Winston tells us he won't go with Labour while doing everything he can to get Labour elected. And now releases communications which were obviously confidential. Luxon needs to get a spine and sack Winston as Foreign Minister.

Watch ever more National votes go over to NZ First .. well played, Winston!

This is how a coalition works - who says they have to be friends! The alternative of a monolithic one party government is a lot scarier- have we forgotten already?

Luxon has already lost my vote for a number of reasons, but if he had a spine and had actually backed the US, I would be more sympathetic. Meanwhile, the more I hear about Peters' shenanigans, the less likely he is to get my vote.

Um Winston is the Foreign Affairs Minister, his criticism of the drop kick Luxon is valid. Winston actually knows how this stuff works and knew the importance of walking a fine line after all he has done it for a while now. Helen Clark recognised his skill. Trump is a tool of Zionist Israel. And no kiwis do not admire him. We loathe the criminal idiocy he inflicts upon our world ,just because he can and he can make millions while doing it. Only a moron would follow Trump up sh** creek .

I agree with luxon - the Hormuz strait has proven to us all how critical it is to our way of life.
The USA has consistently protected our way of life for us whether that be through gun power or dollar diplomacy while we sit in our armchairs condemning them for their nuclear power, or their size or their simple tall poppyness.
We should be supporting this war and the USA- as should Australia- anything less plays straight into chinas hands.
We don’t even need to show up - just say we support it!
We have lived in the glow of America for a long time - and now we finally have a us president who is just calling out the tyrants for who they are and we dare to criticise them.
