John Robertson: What We Are Witnessing Is A First-World Democracy Sliding Into Tribal Barbarism

When Paul Henry stepped into the studio on Q&A with Jack Tame to dissect the state of the nation, he touched a raw nerve that the political establishment spends millions trying to numb: the absolute absurdity of a country running its legal system on racial tribalism. What we are witnessing is a first-world democracy sliding into tribal barbarism, narcotized by an intellectual cowardice that refuses to name the rot eating our civic foundations.

For generations, New Zealand has been subjected to a bipartisan lobotomy, treating a nineteenth-century translation dispute as an unassailable religious dogma rather than a historical artifact. The Treaty of Waitangi is not some sacred covenant of cross-cultural harmony; it is a rotting political anchor dragging this nation down into the toxic mud of permanent factionalism. Keeping this fractured document alive guarantees a lifetime sinecure at the public trough for every professional grievance-peddler and identity-politics hustler who learned how to monetize ancestral bitterness into endless corporate welfare checks, while ordinary citizens watch their standards of living evaporate.

Henry's pushback against this modern caste system highlights how the mechanical extortion of this setup operates in broad daylight, rewarding a self-appointed group of racial aristocrats while treating everyday taxpayers as cash cows with zero political standing. When state-sponsored ideologues carve out multi-million-dollar ethnic slush funds and mandate bureaucratic compliance across public services, they are sending an insulting, brutal message to working families: your tax dollars pay the bills, but your children belong to a lower legislative tier. To look at a modern, interconnected economy and decide that vocational futures, public funding, and basic civil rights should be sliced up by blood quantum is an absolute outrage. They expect the public to swallow this institutionalized robbery with a grin, financing their own disenfranchisement while a class of professional grifters dictates who gets special treatment and who pays the piper.

This systemic rot, which Henry and others rightly challenge when the cameras are rolling, is propped up by a national addiction to primitive animism and metaphysical fog welded directly into our statute books. We are expected to bow our heads to unlegislated spiritual nonsense, forcing archaic tribal mysticism into resource management, local councils, and public law while pretending ancient folkways override basic civic reality. It is a pathetic, infantilizing farce that reduces modern governance to a tribal shaman's workshop. Every time a piece of legislation forces unprovable spiritual concepts and supernatural mumbo-jumbo down the throat of a secular society, it spits in the face of the Enlightenment. If you want a functional country, you cannot enshrine the ghosts of ancestral folklore into the building codes and resource consents of a modern democracy without turning the whole legal framework into an absolute laughingstock.

Generations of intermarriage have woven a complex, beautiful tapestry of mixed-heritage families across this land, yet our laws stubbornly refuse to acknowledge daily biological reality. A kid growing up with a Māori father and a Scottish mother runs headfirst into a schizophrenic wall of state-sanctioned cognitive dissonance—where one half of their bloodline grants them race-based legislative perks and vetoes, while the other half consigns them to the status of a taxpayer expected to shut up and finance their own subjugation. Even if you summoned the ruthless courage to abolish the Treaty and kick the ghost of the British Crown to the curb, these race-obsessed racketeers wouldn't vanish on their own. They have engineered an entire administrative caste system where an individual's civic value is measured by tribal registers rather than personal merit, weaponizing separate sovereignty as a permanent veto over everyone else's lives.

If we want a future worth fighting for, we have to possess the unadulterated backbone to lance this festering boil once and for all, backing the kind of straight-talking reform Paul Henry gestures toward. That means aggressively scrubbing the concept of race entirely out of our legislation, uprooting every single piece of non-secular spiritual garbage, and driving a stake straight through the heart of co-governance. We need to demand a ruthless, unyielding baseline of individual equality under one law for every single human being, where citizenship actually means something and merit replaces tribal extraction. Anything less is just cowardly management of a managed decline, watching a paradise turn into a segregated corporate playground for the professionally offended while the political establishment smiles for the cameras and pretends everything is fine.

Spot-on John in every regard. This piece needs to be printed and put into every letter box in the land and nailed to the door of the Waitangi tribunal.

Rectifying this situation will take much more than a narrow victory for the Right in November ( if this happens)........the damage caused by years of apathy and pandering could be irreversible.

PS Referendum now: democracy not ethnocracy.

Excellent last paragraph John . Thank you.
NZ voters must ensure the Coalition is returned by not wasting their Party Vote on National who gained a million plus party votes and achieved a miserly 5 List MPs .

Electorate Vote National ( where appropriate) and only Party Vote ACT or NZF for a huge victory.

, It is way overdue to end ALL official or legal recognition of race or ethnicity in ALL legislation in New Zealand.
With race/ethnicity no longer having legal status, there would be:-
NO more race-based seats
NO race-specific party in Parliament.
NO more race-based wards in local government.
NO more census questions about ethnicity.
NO more co-governance.
NO “Treaty principles” in legislation
NO more so called “Treaty” claims of unending victimhood.
NO separate Health Authority.
NO Waitangi Tribunal !
NO racial apartheid !
We would all be EQUAL in New Zealand. !!

History tells us that NO NATION OR SOCIETY CAN SURVIVE WHILE RACIST ACTIVISTS PROMOTE DIVISION AND ENTITLEMENT ON THE BASIS OF RACE, (i.e. APARTHEID)

@Allen Heath 7:27am, "This piece needs to be printed and put into every letter box in the land and nailed to the door of the Waitangi tribunal." - agreed but the next best thing is to share the article, or the link to it, to all of one's contacts.

A great analysis of the dire constitutional crisis currently facing what was once a functioning egalitarian society known as New Zealand.
And, as already commented, it should be widely shared.

Strongly worded and extremely well written.
One of the best pieces ever.
Thank you.

If only that could be used in the end of year English comprehension exams.

A searingly honest assessment John, brilliantly written. But, I fear, we cannot undo something like 40 years of treacherous mis-government under a constitutional system now well into its final phase of collapse. We cannot vote our way out of the corruption that voting got us into. The future is destined to be very grim indeed for our children and grandchildren, unless somewhere in their ranks are sufficient numbers of brave hearts to restore this nation to honour and integrity in every area.

In the 1981 census, when you actually had to be Maori to claim that status, there were 279,252 Maori in NZ.
Applying recognised Maori fertility rates to this group since then, the maximum number of real Maori in NZ today cannot be more than 500,000 but close on one million of us now claim that status. So we have some 500,000 “Pakeha Maori” grifters clinging on the tribal coattails in search of the benefits that might accrue.
From my own experience of being married to a Maori for 60 years, I know that many real Maori resent this siphoning off of their benefits to anyone whose grandmother once passed a Maori in the street or some other equally spurious claim to ancestry.
In terms of race relations however, the upside is that if this rate of Maori conversion continues, we will all be Maori by 2045, after which the problem of differential treatment disappears.

Articles like this keep hope alive.

Our politicians need to listen. We want equal opportunity, one law for all.

We must have a referendum this election !!!!

Anon @ 11.00am.
Agreed that by 2045 NZ will have a large % of 'maori' but I disagree that the differentialism will disappear.
Already the activist clique promoting the separatism speak of people being 'the wrong sort of maori'.
When they do this, they do it with the purpose of separating the separatist 'group' into a more diluted group who can continue to divide and conquer or in this case continue being 'grifters clinging on the tribal coattails in search of the benefits that might accrue'.
This is the problem when everything and everyone is defined by their ethnic identifier and not just being a homosapien.

Michael Laws interviewed Richard Prebble this morning. Very good listening.

There must be one journalist in this country who will ask Luxon what Nationals position is on all things race.

We deserve to know before the election!!!!!!

We can’t afford these Luxury racist beliefs anymore, if we ever could in the first place

It’s ironic the race hustlers are trying to establish literal structural racism with their continual grievance based backwards looking apartheid

In the '60s we still had our Scottish heritage education largely intact . One of the tenets of Traditional education was a work ethic .This was derived from Protestant Christianity..The welfare state depends on a workforce .; ' If you don't work you don't eat '. Men producing offspring they take no responsibility for also does not fit well with Christian beliefs and then there is the disciplining of children. The 'rod' meant , giving guidance , correction and explicit instruction. Progressive Education promotes permissive discipline and constructivism - the child knows best . Discipline is , for this ideology , repression. Therefore there, needs to be a distinction of some sort in 'uprooting every single piece of nonsecular garbage ' so you don't cancel out' cultural Christianity 'of which I have only given three examples .
, I believe , why we were Godzone mid last century but are now "the devil' s playground' was because of traditional values in society and in Education .These traditional values were Christian and classical .
I think there is some difficulty in defining 'secular 'in order to retain ' cultural Christtianity ' but not Maori religious beliefs with Karakia,. Maybe a more careful look at the 1866 Education Act. .

Anon at 12.21: No - 2045 will not be a 3 tier system ( Maori 1 and 2 + 3 = all others). Indian and Chinese immigrants will step in to settle this.
