The poll this week on tax finds that only 4 percent of people think they should pay more tax, while 64 percent support a wealth tax.
I wonder if the pollster had read this statement first, would it have changed the answer?
We have a progressive tax system. The more you earn, the higher the proportion of your income you pay in tax. The top 10 percent of earners pay 48 percent of all personal income tax.
But we also have a progressive system of government transfers. Those with the greatest needs receive the most.
When the IRD takes the tax people pay and subtracts the benefits and tax credits they receive, it finds that the top 10 percent account for 101 percent of net income tax.

How can it be 101 percent?
The other 90 percent, taken together, receive slightly more in benefits and tax credits than they pay in income tax.
The top 10 percent therefore provide all the net income-tax revenue — and a little more.
If the poll question had been:
“The top 10 percent of earners provide 101 percent of net income tax. Do you think they should pay more?”
Would 64 percent still say yes?

Richard, I have a better idea for voting. It's blatantly obvious we do NOT contribute the same. A few of us are funding a large number of parasites, whos lifestyle creep has them with their hands out , not thanking anyone, but actually demanding more. There are now more freeloaders than those of us keeping the system afloat....based on your data. I'm guessing I'm In the 10% group as I pay well in the hundreds of thousands in tax.
So here is my proposal.
Currently everyone in this country gets one vote. Let's keep that the same so we are not taking anything away from anyone. However let's reward those that contribute and keep this country ticking over. Let's give everyone an extra vote for every $5000 of tax they pay. Everyone still gets at least one vote, those who contribute and pay tax, get morevotes. the result is in the hands of those that contribute to this country. That's fair.
Great idea 7.59 AM. Maybe take it one step further and disallow the vote of anyone who’s been on Welfare for more than 6 months.
anon - 11am. Thanks for you input. But no, thats not a good idea. I’ve given this some thought.
Here is my positive slant on my great idea. To ensure a smooth transition, we must avoid any perception that we are taking resources or opportunities away from anyone. Doing so would only create unnecessary friction.
Instead, the strategy should focus entirely on empowerment. We want to amplify the voices and increase the influence of the key contributors who are driving our progress and delivering tangible results.
Let's ensure our messaging reflects this positive reinforcement rather than subtraction.
So everyone still gets one vote. But a person paying $100,000 in tax receives their one vote PLUS 20 additional votes. That is more fair.
The problem we have on the conservative side is that we are to slack to really engage. Just driven up the top of the south today, endless national signs 2 ticks national when it is plainly a fraud on the conservative voter
Parasites of the blob should not have the same rights as those who fund the parasites and the blob - think Orwell - I might be the horse, but if I am doing the work of the horse I want to benefit the most. Unlike the pigs, I don’t mind sharing and lifting others up, but I do mind doing all the work and having all the spoils taken away from me and given to the pigs, the sheep and the good for nothing lazy f-wits who “work” for the blob, or who are labour/green, socialist, communist, Arden sycophants….
My point exactly 9.19.
