David Farrar: Mob defunded

The Herald reports:

The Government will stop funding the controversial Mongrel Mob-led drug rehabilitation programme Kahukura.

Police Minister Mark Mitchell confirmed funding would not continue under the coalition Government, describing initial decisions by Labour to support the programme as “perverse”

“We are not going to fund the Mongrel Mob to deliver programmes around meth when they are some of the biggest dealers in methamphetamine. It’s just perverse.”

Good. A reminder that it was Jacinda Ardern’s personal decision to fund the programme.

David Farrar runs Curia Market Research, a specialist opinion polling and research agency, and the popular Kiwiblog where this article was sourced. He previously worked in the Parliament for eight years, serving two National Party Prime Ministers and three Opposition Leaders.

This story is at least a week old. However some facts about the program. There has been surprisingly no real assessment done on it's effectiveness, but a Justice Department inquiry found two thirds of participants admitted to still useing meth after 12 months. Most of the time spent by participants was doing work on gang leader Sonny Smith's farm, so that's not surprising. Many have continued to offend, often linked with drugs, but then the Kahukura program could give no report to the courts about the offender's "progress". Often gang members tend to leave gangs when they finally grow up and deal with their addictions and lifestyle choices. The Kahukura program was a way of preventing that and keeping those people as gang members. Despite all this, the Kahukura program was supported by our last PM, the woke media (who falsely reported that the Police were in favour), public service and some of the judiciary.

Of course it was Arderns decision to fund lunacy. Mark Mitchell is of course correct- he has more common sense than the 3 left parties put together. I'm sure he would have kept the program going if it were providing results (ie a considerable REDUCTION in drugs, as opposed to the INCREASED drug dealing funded program Ardern promoted)

Seen any discussion on this in the Herald or Stuff ?
What, our darling Jacinda made an error of judgment ?
