Grant Robertson has gone to run Otago, Auckland has introduced a Māori-related compulsory course which has received surprise and push back, and AUT has been giving out free points in a race-based travel rort, where if you're Māori you get a better chance at travel funding than if you're not Māori.
So when the latest international university rankings were released yesterday the fact Otago is at its lowest ranking ever will come as a good chance to offer a decent serve to old Grant "can't run an economy, can't run a university" Robertson.
Auckland was another who fell out of the top 150 for the first time. So, once again, a chance to have a crack.
There are other rankings and depending on which ones you look at depends on how they are judged. Overall, you can argue we are not particularly high up in global terms.
Auckland as our top facility outside the top 150 doesn’t sound very encouraging, because it isn't.
Otago is so far down the list they don’t even rank them specifically. It's just a band and they have gone from the 301-350 band down to the 351-400 band. They might be 399th in the world. Surely there's some reputational work to be done?
I note Otago defended themselves by saying they were disappointed, but no New Zealand university had improved, sort of in a "well we are all a bit useless then, aren't we?", kind of way.
Having had a bit of experience with universities these past few years —two of our five have, or are, attending and a third is about to go— the unmistakable reality that smacks you in the face is the wokeness of it all and the stench of indoctrination about the place.
They are there to fill your head with the stuff they believe to be correct.
You think their way or you are wrong. A lot of it is race-based and it's unappealing.
Mind you, I'm older. Maybe young kids lap it up, or think they lap it up, until they mature a bit.
But even the teaching brigade at some of these places have voiced their concerns around freedom of speech and when you add the concerns to the rankings, the overall picture painted is not flattering.
Because they are so woke my fear is a ranking like this will not be seen as a reason to change, or improve, but yet another reason to dismiss those who can't possibly know what they're talking about.

A natural consequence of putting more money into ‘kia ora’ this & that & pushing men into women’s spaces over delivering quality education & ensuring academic freedom.
The glory days of uni life in NZ are long gone.
Instead of being a community of teachers, scholars & thinkers, NZ unis have just become the thought police.
With most degrees having no tangible link to a real world job anyway, the idea of seeking higher education becomes more pointless than ever as with ideology trumping even basic biology, their odds of producing another Plato are zero to none.
I am curious as to how the Science majors are managing to work around mandated concepts of Maori myths & women with penises though….

They have had their time, there is a glimmer of hope that some of those in the unis will do the right thing. Stand up against the racists who think racist policies are the "in thing". Hold them to account and watch them squeal prior to crumbling
Given that these global rankings would have been calculated before Auckland University announced its compulsory ‘Waipapa Taumata Rau’ course it can be confidently predicted that its ranking will slide further downwards, probably significantly, in the next series of rankings.
Well you've got one of the govt parties (ACT) carrying on about spaces for Maori and PI students (which have been around for decades), and now, about the world rankings and the new course at Auckland uni. You've got a govt party trashing the unis for votes, on racial grounds - to cut into National's votes at the next election - but they risk scoring an own goal for the country by grandstanding.
Joanne W. This has nothing to do with how the varsities are assessed. Go to the Times Higher Education website and have a read of the wide range of assessment criteria. Simply put, our universities are bad at teaching and research as assessed by an overseas independent company. When you have an emotional lunatic like Kylie Quince teaching law, this is the result you get. Your politics don't come into their assessment.

If this racist paper was in anyway balanced, it might be marginally acceptable, however it will be a continuation of the indoctrination that has been introduced into primary schools in recent years.

Yes, I'm aware of the criteria. But the discussion of rankings has focused a lot on the supposed 'Maorification' of the universities, which - if it is going to happen - hasn't happened yet. My point was that if ACT regularly trashes unis for their own purposes, then that'll inflict reputational damage. It's not the existence of Maori content that is the problem, but the constant grandstanding and exaggeration that is encouraged in the public discourse about its extent and its damaging effects.
Joanne, where else in the world does a student of, say, pharmacy or mathematics have to do a course on a Neolithic culture and its pidginised language?
Ah, but I don't accept that it's a racist paper.... It's not even made up primarily of content relating to the Treaty or Maori. People's ideas about the paper have been largely determined by a screech-fest by right-wing pundits like Hosking and Plunket.
Where does Massey University rank. It was once a proud agricultural science university but under it's current vice chancellor who is hell bent on making it a Ti Tiriti centric establishment, it is now a laughing stock

As an academic who clearly has indoctrinated many students with her ill considered opinions, does she expect her grandchildren in years to come to apologize for her extremely poor actions of today ?
The problem here is thinking that university teaching involves 'indoctrination'. And that this person posting anonymously knows anything about me. (This Anonymous stuff on the site is irritating btw and a disincentive to posting: how do you distinguish the writer of one anonymous post from another?)
