JC: Is Goldsmith Out of Touch?

Paul Goldsmith’s recent comments on the taxpayer-owned entities Radio New Zealand and Television New Zealand bear little relation to global movements within the media landscape. His aspirations for these two media outlets cannot possibly be realised unless certain undertakings are made, of which no reference was made in his remarks.

He wants them to undertake their duties in such a way that trust in them is increased. Also, he wants TVNZ to improve its financial performance. He wants RNZ to rebuild its audience: in 2020 it was the market leader. It now sits eighth with its cumulative audience having dropped from 703,048 to 467, 700 today. To explain this it’s worth being cognisant of what has been happening globally with the media in general over the last five to ten years. Some of the changes are well known, others less so.

First, and this is very pertinent to the comments Goldsmith made, is that public broadcasting has suffered continuing losses in audience numbers at an ever-increasing rate. This has been less of an issue in America in respect of public broadcasting, but its decline in Australia, UK, Canada and here is an on-going trend.

In America the loss of audience is most felt in those privately owned television stations that favour the left and spout a left-wing narrative: the majority of the public has seen through them. Overall, right-leaning media outlets are outperforming their counterparts both in audience size and revenue. The Guardian, that bastion of entrenched leftist propaganda, reports the election of Donald Trump has given these right-leaning media a boost. What an admission to make!

The drop in audience for the BBC is startling. BBC One has lost 15 per cent of its audience in the last five years. The reason given by the BBC is because of ‘news avoiders’: people who don’t want to hear the news as it’s ‘too depressing’. Poppycock. What the current research shows is people are getting their news from other sources such as online. So the truth of the matter is these ‘news avoiders’ are avoiding the BBC because of the left wing bias and wokeness that is now endemic in the organisation.

Meanwhile GB News, a right-leaning news channel, is outperforming both the BBC and Sky News. The BBC is increasingly losing working-class viewers to GB News. Here, again, is reflected a worldwide trend where the political left have abandoned the working class at their peril and their left-wing media friends are also feeling the effects of such a move. Last year half a million cancelled their BBC licence.

BBC Radio 4 has lost 800,000 listeners in the last year to rivals and podcasts. Again, it’s their bias that is costing them listeners. Commercial radio continues to grow at the BBC’s expense. As in America, podcasts are becoming increasingly popular. Most of these reflect a centre-right perspective.

A similar trend is happening in Australia, where both ABC television and radio are shedding audiences. Right-leaning Sky News is doing particularly well, as are privately owned commercial radio stations that also lean right. In Canada it is interesting that all of the major news media outlets are right-leaning bar one, which is the government-owned left-leaning CBC. In 2018, CBC had a 7.6 per cent share of the national prime time viewing audience, while today that figure sits at just 2.1 per cent, a 76 per cent drop.

So the trends are obvious: viewers and listeners are deserting left-wing media in droves and it’s no different here.

Going back to Paul Goldsmith’s comments, I didn’t hear anything in them that reflected their left-wing bias was a, if not, THE major problem. I wrote to Mr Goldsmith a while ago suggesting that one way out of their financial woes was to turn TV One into a decent news and current affairs channel along the lines of Sky News In Australia.

His reply left me somewhat flabbergasted as he told me he couldn’t interfere with their operational decisions and I should write to them directly. He, on our behalf, owns the outfit. Can you imagine the owner of a private business being prevented from introducing ways that might improve its performance? It is ridiculous. That is why his recent comments count for nothing in respect of both TVNZ and RNZ.

They’re not going to change their ways unless directed to do so. This is precisely why an editorial board is being appointed at privately owned NZME to ensure better news coverage and reporting from the left-wing journalists infesting their newsrooms. Nothing will change unless Minister Goldsmith is prepared to act and change out their boards. Unfortunately, that looks unlikely and so he is wasting his time.

I don't know about out-of-touch but I do think think that both Luxon and Goldsmith owe Melissa Lee an apology for their utter uselessness.

The drop in listeners and viewers for ,,progressive,, ie left DEI CRT rainbow backing outlets is one thing but when it comes to voting it may be different, the Canadian and Australian elections being examples.

Distancing of the Minister has not stopped adoption of Willie Jackson's maorification programme, which is still proceeding unabated. A disproportionate number of presenters are trace maori and most of the rest and near all interviewees blatantly pro maori. Despite the extreme annoyance of mature listeners they persist in using maori substitute words for days of the week, cities, , rohe, mahi, whanau etc. A perusal of the Board composition explains much.RNZ is so pro maori probably noone there reads BV so many mature observations pass them by.

Simple answer, the right honourable Paul Goldsmith does not wish to change! the left wing narrative currently being expoused by these tax payer owned media outlets.
This current National party has no intention of changing its commitment to racist, anti democratic policies as a continuation of past governments
Unified Ideology.

Just stop funding these organizations that see their roles as destroying democracy, challenging the government, and eroding our civilization.

Why would you not stop someone who is continually trying to kill you ?

Come on Willis - defund them.
