DTNZ: National’s Digital Driver’s Licence plan met with fierce backlash

The National Party has copped fierce backlash on social media over its plan for Digital Driver’s Licences.

National’s plan to introduce digital driver’s licences has ignited a wave of fierce backlash online, with critics accusing the government of ushering in an “Orwellian digital prison” under the guise of “convenience”.

In a tweet announcing the move, the party said: “We’ve introduced legislation for digital driver licences, making it easier for you to have your licence on your phone instead of in your wallet.”

The announcement was met with immediate and heated criticism across social media. Many users argued that digital licences were unnecessary and raised concerns about privacy, surveillance, and coercion.

One critic responded: “Many of us don’t carry a phone everywhere we go, main reason being we don’t want anyone tracking our movements. I’m not carrying a phone just so I can have a digital driver’s licence. The least you could do is be honest and say it’s an instruction from the WEF!”

Others rejected the proposal in blunt terms, with one reaction reading: “F*** you a**holes.”

Another expressed frustration at being tethered to digital devices: “Nope. Don’t want it on my phone which I try to escape from and am sick of being tethered to like a digital mule … so please have alternative options…”

Concerns over government overreach were widespread, with a commenter warning: “You think we are going to agree to this Orwellian digital prison you are foisting on us?? Think again..”

Some simply dismissed the plan with profanity, including one post that read: “F*** off.”

The strongest resistance came from opponents of digital identity systems more broadly, with one response declaring: “NO. NO THANKS. WE DON’T WANT DIGITAL ID ANYTHING. Nothing at all, ZIP, NADA, nothing. We know where it all leads >>>> Digital Dystopia and subversion to the Socialist State. NO. NO WAY. FORGET IT. Same with your Car Spyware. Stick it where the sun doesn’t shine.”

Another reaction mocked the party’s framing of convenience: “Ahh yes, control and subversion disguised as convenience example #12384. Govern us harder, please, we’re incapable of inserting a small plastic card into our wallet and carrying that when we drive.”

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that road user charges are also being lined up...requiring widespread number plate recognition technology...
