That’s basically the message to homeowners hoping the Government will swoop in and buyout houses after the next big cyclone.
Watts is the climate Minister. He took a paper to cabinet. I had a read in the weekend.
They haven’t immediately turned the tap off to buyouts, but they’re making it pretty clear it won’t be long before they do.
How long? Doesn’t say, specifically. Just sometime in the medium to long term.
If you’re buying a house or land, you’re going to want to check flood zones very carefully.
After the Auckland floods - you know which parts of suburb are more prone to flooding. That’s, generally, where you don’t want to buy.
Or you can and manage the risk and mitigate.
Council and government spent $2 billion on buyouts. That may not happen next time.
Guess how many homes are sitting in flood prone areas right now? Hundreds of thousands. They’re worth $180 billion.
It means insurance will be more expensive or non-existent for some areas and properties.
The government basically wants to take itself out of the risk equation.
Cause it’s cheaper for them.
Buying out flood prone land distorts the market. If you know a buyout will happen, you’ll be less worried about flooding and pay more than you should for it
The scientists tell damage from cyclones and flooding will get more intense and frequent.
Consider this a warning from the government that it doesn’t want the same thing happening to the state of its books.

We have had the settled science of climate change for decades now. Anyone owning property likely to be impacted by this has known about it for decades. So choices were made, now it is time for responsibility for those choices.
Hard not to connect the dots between this and 'managed retreat' policies being adopted by NZ & Aus local councils, all related to the Climate Change scam. No-one of course talking about mitigating risk to existing properties. Who will end up with all of this property which has its value heavily discounted in such way? A rhetorical question of course for NZ..
Don’t you love it when the corrupt MSM attempt to garner credibility by stating “experts say” without naming them. Ryan uses this little ploy in his piece “scientists say” damage from cyclones and flooding will get more intense and frequent.
Mr Beechey tells us the claims that "experts say" or: "scientists say" are of a vagueness as to be meaningless. Yet he repeatedly tells us that the 'MSM is corrupt'. What say he tells us which ones he's referring to. Or are they ALL corrupt? That's quite a claim. 'Corrupt' is a powerful condemnation. Perhaps he can give us examples of corruption.
It's called weather, whether you like it or not.
The IPCC has not established a link between increased precipitation and increased flooding.

As noted in that article, the IPCC explicitly warn against associating increases in extreme rainfall with flooding.
Councils must focus on keeping river beds free, stopping slash, and in the cases of places like Auckland, keeping drains flowing (leaves, rubbish etc).
Another report by a consutant / expert dutifully handed on by Hon Simon Watt to appease the failing NZ -PM . What a sad situation, but consistnt with the selection of Mumbo Jumbo's who have waxed lyrical about Sea level rise disaster ,Global warming , Climate Change et al while the NZ taxopayer is flogged unceremoniously.
NZ needs a leader who has acumen and probity , honest conversation , not sound bites and back slapping mates for photos .
To repurpose a well known meme: It's the weather, stupid".
However much the conspiracy theorists bitch and moan, the data is uncontroversial. It's getting wetter, winder, hotter and generally becoming more difficult to maintain an ordered society as a result. Sneering at the science is not helpful because it's all we have to guide us in rational decision making.
It matters not whether the change is man-made or a whim of the gods. We have to cope with it. And that means using the data wisely in making choices about where we live and build our communities.
But sometimes Governments need to nudge the people into making decisions that work for the community, not solely for the personal gratification of individuals. It's called leadership. Abandoning property buyouts is just part of that process.
Too bad that upsets a tiny minority that don't take kindly to authority of any kind when defending their perceived rights, regardless of what the data clearly indicates. Because rights must always be balanced with responsibilities.
Yet many of the flooded properties requiring buyout in the past decades have been flooded due to gross mismanagement of forestry, and or council land!
Westport
Cyclone Gabrielle
Just two examples of flooding and natural disaster events that were actually 90% worse due to man made for profit activities or lack of formerly scheduled mass by council.
And no governments shouldn’t bail people out - insurance is in place for a reason….and when insurance won’t cover man made (eg council caused) disaster there should be legal redress options through the courts. (Against both insurer and council)
The term word “corrupt” is the most appropriate word I can think of to describe the MSM. This is not the first time that this term has offended Mr McGregor who I suspect is a devoted follower of MSM. I could provide many examples but would stray from the current topic. Legacy media has protected the greatest lie ever told. Have you noticed how our media has never published the work of a regular contributor, Ian Bradford? Why is that, one would wonder? Would it have something to do with the fact that anthropogenic climate change is the MSM’s non negotiable cornerstone of their ongoing propaganda? The MSM feels it their duty to shape public opinion. Therefore, in my book, that’s corruption.
