Community calling for return to Clive River’s true name

Now the people of Kohupātiki Marae are calling on the New Zealand Geographic Board to restore the original name of the river and ensure proper consultation with mana whenua. Paipper sees it as the first step in reclaiming a connection with the land she feels has been lost.

“We are suffering from a cultural disconnect from our environment in a sense,” she said. “At the same time, our mauri has been usurped by giving names that are meaningless and have no connection to us.”

Systemic racism, discrimination and bullying at the University of Otago will be addressed by senior leaders as a matter of urgency months after staff and students walked out on their school to maintain their mana.

In an email to staff on Thursday, vice-chancellor David Murdoch​ said previous attempts to address racism across the institution have been unsatisfactory and at times, ignored.

Law Society introduces panel to conduct legal services independent review

The New Zealand Law Society | Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa has introduced a three-member panel that will be in charge of conducting an independent review of legal services regulation and representation in the country.

The Independent Review Panel will be composed of Professor Ron Paterson ONZM, Professor Jacinta Ruru MNZM, FRSNZ (Raukawa, Ngāti Ranginui) and Jane Meares. The appointments were made based on the review and recommendation of the Independent Steering Group led by Whaimutu Dewes.

When the Act was introduced to replace the Marine and Foreshore Act, the then National Government indicted it was likely to mean customary title would only be recognised over about 3 percent of the coastline.
