Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has announced a refreshed ministerial line-up to continue fixing the basics and protecting New Zealand’s future.

Our Beehive monitors found just one new post on the government’s official website, dealing with the Cabinet shake-up that has been widely reported and heavily analysed over the past day or so.

Much of the commentariat’s attention was focused on Shane Reti’s losing his Health portfolio.

Capitalist: Luxon Needs to Wake Up

In 1975 the US Senate conducted a major investigation into the activities of the CIA; it was known as the Church Committee after its chairman Frank Church. During the course of this investigation a great deal of concerning stuff came to light which shocked America and led to greater oversight of the CIA which has continued through to the present day. Until 1975 the CIA had operated without having to really answer to anybody; they could do what they wanted, when they wanted, and nobody ever really knew. Occasionally a leak would appear in the media (such as using Cosa Nostra mobsters in a plot to assassinate Fidel Castro) but the agency would simply lie about it.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has surprised everyone with his ruthlessness in sacking two of his ministers from their crucial portfolios. Removing ministers for poor performance after only five months in the job just doesn’t normally happen in politics.

That’s refreshing and will be extremely well received. The public will perceive this unprecedented move as a sign that Luxon has very high standards for his government and is determined that his ministers actually deliver results.

Taxpayers’ Union is cheered by the slimming of the Cabinet – and it can’t grumble about Churchill trust appointments

One thing to be said about the latest news on the government’s official website is that taxpayers have scant cause for complaint about spending excesses.

One announcement – the reallocation of Kiri Allan’s ministerial portfolios – means more work is being done by a slimmer cabinet. Or rather, more responsibilities are being shared by a reduced cabinet.

The Cabinet reshuffle yesterday was all the confirmation we needed, as I said yesterday, that this is the same old government doing the same old stuff. 

Which is to be expected because they were never going to be able to just bring in fresh new experienced faces to shake everything up, because they don’t have any. 

So Police Minister Stuart Nash is back for another round, the very likeable but politically inexperienced Ayesha Verrall is now Health minister, I feel for her.

The Ardern Government has taken a hammering in recent days.

The weird aspect is that it has largely done the damage to itself, with the Opposition left only to rub salt into the ugly wounds.
