The elephant in the room when Guyon Espiner interviewed David Seymour last week about race-based entry to medical schools was the fact his former wife Emma began her career as a doctor via Auckland University’s Māori and Pacific Admission Scheme. And, according to Emma Espiner (as she was then), he had encouraged her to apply.

Act has pledged to abolish MAPAS and it would have been fascinating if Guyon had explained why he fully supported someone gaining a place through a pathway that offers preferential treatment based on ancestry.

It was an opportunity to learn a lot more about the man and his plans for New Zealand and there were some good parts, including the reasons why a Capital Gains Tax wouldn’t be a good idea.

But Espiner wasted too much time on issues that have been well canvassed like claiming the housing allowance, selling his apartment and poll ratings.

It’s hard to imagine a more spectacularly pointless exercise than RNZ’s “investigation” of the language used by National leader Christopher Luxon.

Pointless, that is, unless the objective was to discredit Luxon by presenting him as a reciter of repetitive, predictable and boring election-year rhetoric – or worse, as an unscrupulous dog-whistler trying to exploit public anxieties.
