Bob McCoskrie: Vandalism is a ‘hate’ crime… sometimes

I want to tell you about four acts of vandalism and how the media and the cultural elites treated them.

Now please let me clarify from the outset – we campaign on a lot of things, but we don’t endorse vandalism. No matter how much we may agree or disagree with the protestors, our strategy has always been to inform, and to protest through official channels and promoting good legislation, and educating and empowering parents. That’s where we’re at. You may agree or disagree with that.

Simon O'Connor: Inconsistency at the end of the rainbow

I find many protest actions ridiculous and counter-productive. Throwing white paint over rainbow crossings is just another example. Such actions don’t achieve much, if anything. I don’t feel such actions are particularly constructive, conducive to civil discourse, or respectful. Such protests upset those symbolically targeted and often, in these modern times, simply provides media and others a further reason to fuel their erroneous ‘victim versus oppressor’ narrative. Put simply, I don’t see much good in such protest actions other than furthering grievance all round.

Police are treating the painting over of a rainbow crossing in Auckland this morning as a hate crime.

[…] In a statement, Auckland City Central Area Commander Inspector Grant Tetzlaff said police made a number of enquiries into the incident on Thursday afternoon and founds [sic] some items of interest.

Officers had raided a property in Flat Bush, which was linked to the owners of a vehicle involved, he said.
